Resilin-mimetics as a smart biomaterial platform for biomedical applications

Rajkamal Balu et al.

Summary: Intrinsically disordered proteins, such as the native elastic insect protein Resilin, have brought about a significant shift in the structure-function paradigm of proteins. Advances in computational techniques, polypeptide synthesis methods, and modular protein engineering have led to the development of novel resilin-like polypeptides with applications in various fields. The encoding of responsive behavior in amino acid sequence level remains a mystery, but the potential for future research lies in the design and development of new modular RLP-based biomaterials with programmable structure, properties, and functions. Resilin-mimetics have emerged as a biomaterial with versatile potential applications, and further exploration and mimicry of natural materials are ongoing.

Highly sensitive VOC detectors using insect olfactory receptors reconstituted into lipid bilayers

Tetsuya Yamada et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel VOC sensor based on olfactory receptors, utilizing a specifically designed gas flow system to achieve rapid parts per billion-level detection of 1-octen-3-ol. The sensor demonstrates high detection probability and extends the applications of biological odorant sensing to breath diagnosis systems and environmental monitoring.

Olfaction in Anopheles mosquitoes

Joanna K. Konopka et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes, especially the Anopheles species, are a global threat to human health as vectors of diseases such as malaria. Understanding Anopheles olfaction can help in reducing the spread of malaria, as these mosquitoes rely on their sense of smell for most of their behaviors. Various topics related to Anopheles olfaction are explored in this review, highlighting the importance of targeting mosquito olfaction in vector management strategies.
