Design of a novel multi-walled tube-reinforced aluminum foam for energy absorption

Zhi-jia Zhang et al.

Summary: The novel MWTRF showed improved quasi-static compression performance and energy absorption compared to traditional structures, with AF stabilizing buckling and changing compression deformation modes. Numerical studies indicated that density distribution in MWTRF impacted energy absorption efficiency, with density of AF and thickness of EMWT affecting energy absorption capability. The proposed MWTRF demonstrated outstanding energy absorption efficiency compared to other core topologies on material selection map.

Mechanical properties and energy absorption capabilities of aluminium foam sandwich structure subjected to low-velocity impact

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic behaviors, deformation and damage mechanisms, and energy absorption of aluminium foam sandwich structures subjected to low-velocity impact. Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to evaluate the influences of face sheet thickness, core height, and density on the performance of energy absorption. The results show that the combination of impact energy and energy absorption indicators play a crucial role in the optimal design of sandwich structures.

Prediction and prevention of fracture defect in plastic forming for aluminum foam sandwich panel

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the predicting and avoiding method of core fracture in plastic forming for aluminum foam sandwich panel (AFSP) by introducing ductile fracture criteria and conducting experiments and simulations. It was found that multi-step forming and increasing core relative density can reduce the risk of core fracture during curved AFSP forming.

Numerical Study on the Plastic Forming of Doubly Curved Surfaces of Aluminum Foam Sandwich Panel Using 3D Voronoi Model

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presented a numerical investigation on the plastic forming of doubly curved surfaces of aluminum foam sandwich panels. It established a mesoscopic 3D Voronoi model to realistically describe the structure of closed-cell aluminum foam, and conducted simulations and experiments to analyze the deformation behaviors and forming defects. The results indicated that the Voronoi AFSP model accurately reflected the actual defects and demonstrated high forming accuracy in plastic forming of doubly curved sandwich panels.

Finite element analysis of porous polymer coated pipelines subjected to impact

Ole Vestrum et al.

Summary: Subsea steel pipelines are often coated with external polymer coatings to provide corrosion protection and thermal insulation, while also contributing significantly to energy absorption during impact events. Through simulations and experiments, it is essential to further explore the strain-rate and thermal sensitivity of the coating material to improve the accuracy of modeling and predictions in pipeline design.

Sandwich Structures for Energy Absorption Applications: A Review

Faris Tarlochan

Summary: It is essential to design proper engineering structures as energy absorbers for high dynamic loading situations, such as accidents, blasts, or impacts. One type of energy absorbers is sandwich structures, which are capable of absorbing high kinetic energy through irreversible deformation. These structures, particularly with foam and architected cores, show potential for wider applications due to their lightweight nature and high-energy absorption capabilities, despite the lack of consensus on a particular design among existing literature.
