EDM of Ti6Al4V under nano-graphene mixed dielectric: a detailed roughness analysis

Kashif Ishfaq et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the potential of nano-graphene as a nano-powder additive for improving the roughness in electrical discharge machining (EDM) of Ti-alloy. Experimental findings reveal that using an aluminum electrode with graphene mixed dielectric produces the best surface quality, while the worst surface roughness is observed with a brass electrode. Additionally, it is found that a positive tool polarity results in lower roughness for all types of electrodes. By optimizing the settings, a reduction of 61.4% in the machined specimen's roughness compared to the average roughness value recorded during experimentation can be achieved.

Analyzing micromachining errors in EDM of Inconel 600 using various biodegradable dielectrics

Kashif Ishfaq et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the use of six different biodegradable dielectrics in electric discharge machining (EDM) of Inconel 600. Canola oil is found to be the most effective in reducing dimensional overcut, while the combination of sunflower oil and copper electrode also shows promising results. Compared to conventional kerosene oil, the biodegradable dielectrics can significantly reduce overcut.

A review on microholes formation in glass-based substrates by electrochemical discharge drilling for MEMS applications

Tarlochan Singh et al.

Summary: Continuous demands for advanced radio-frequency transmission at higher frequencies have led to the use of glass-based materials in radio-frequency micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) applications. The superior electrical insulation properties and optical transparency of glass make it an attractive choice, despite the challenges in micromachining. Electrochemical discharge drilling (ECDD) is a low-cost method with potential for fabricating micro-holes in glass substrates.

Investigating cryogenically treated electrodes' performance under modified dielectric(s) for EDM of Inconel(617)

Kashif Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Inconel 617 has unique characteristics that make it difficult to machine with conventional processes. Electric discharge cutting (EDM) is generally used for precise cutting, but it has a low machining rate. This study comprehensively examines the use of cryogenically treated electrodes and modified dielectrics to overcome this issue. Experimentation was performed using different types of electrodes and dielectric media, and Cu electrodes performed the best in terms of material removal rate (MRR). A blend of Span-20 and kerosene dielectric produced the highest MRR. Cryo-treated brass provided a significantly higher MRR compared to non-cryo-treated brass, and cryo-treated graphite tool produced the largest MRR when T-20 mixed kerosene was used. Span-20 added kerosene was the best choice for high MRR with non-cryo-treated electrodes, while Tween-20 mixed kerosene was best suited for cryo-treated electrodes.

Improvement in energy channelization behaviour during micro hole formation in Y-SZ ceramic with magnetic field assisted ECSM process

Tarlochan Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, the energy channelization behavior during machining of micro holes in Y-SZ under magneto hydrodynamic conditions was improved. The integration of magnetic field with ECSM process formed a stable gas film, which increased discharge frequency and discharge current. Evidence from various sources demonstrated the underlying process and material removal mechanisms. The magnetic field also aided in flushing out impurities from the machining region.

Fabrication of micro holes in Yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-SZ) by hybrid process of electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM)

Tarlochan Singh et al.

Summary: The integrated approach of electrolyte flow and pressurized feeding in electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) process has shown to increase machining efficiency and improve hole depth while reducing diameter. The increased frequency of electrochemical discharges (ECD's) due to the supply of electrolyte allows controlled material removal without causing fracturing. Additionally, the supply of electrolyte decreases tool wear, leading to consistent machining conditions for longer durations.
