Microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-3Sn-1Ca reinforced with AlN nano-particles

Shaozhu Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of adding different amounts of AlN nanoparticles on the microstructural evolution and strengthening mechanisms of Mg-3Sn-1Ca based alloys were investigated. It was observed that increasing the amount of AlN nanoparticles led to a significant decrease in grain size. The presence of AlN nanoparticles refined the primary crystal phases and provided more nucleation sites for the formation of magnesium. Additionally, the nanoparticles restricted grain growth during solidification. The addition of AlN nanoparticles resulted in improved tensile properties and hardness at both room temperature and high temperature.

Segregation-driven exceptional twin-boundary strengthening in lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys

I Basu et al.

Summary: Twinning-mediated plasticity in hexagonal close-packed crystal structures offers great potential for achieving lean Mg-based alloys with high strength and extended ductility. The effects of Zn and Ca solutes on micropillar deformation and the response of pre-existing twin boundaries to applied stress were assessed. In the presence of Zn and Ca solutes, the micropillars exhibited enhanced strength and ductility due to the periodic segregation of solutes at the twin boundaries. In contrast, pure Mg micropillars showed massive twin growth and basal slip, leading to earlier failure.

Microstructure refinement, mechanical and biocorrosion properties of Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy improved by a new severe plastic deformation process

M. Kavyani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and biocorrosion performance of a Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy under different processing conditions. The results showed that the alloy experienced grain refinement, improved mechanical properties, and enhanced biocorrosion resistance after undergoing the HECAP process. These findings suggest that HECAPed Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy has great potential for biomedical applications.

Effect of Al addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Zn alloys

Zhi-bing Ding et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Mg-15.3Gd-1Zn alloys with different Al contents were investigated. The addition of 0.4 wt.% Al facilitates the formation of 18R-LPSO phase. After homogenization treatment, (Mg,Zn)3Gd, 18R-LPSO and some Al11Gd3 phases are transformed into the high-temperature stable 14H-LPSO phases. The particulate Al-Gd phases can stimulate the nucleation of dynamic recrystallization. The tensile strength of the as-rolled alloys is improved remarkably due to grain refinement and the reinforcement of LPSO phase. The precipitation of the beta' phase in the peak-aged alloys significantly improves the strength. The peak-aged alloy containing 0.4 wt.% Al achieves excellent mechanical properties.

Compressive Properties and Energy Absorption Characteristics of Extruded Mg-Al-Ca-Mn Alloy at Various High Strain Rates

Chongchen Xiang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the mechanical properties and energy absorption characteristics of extruded Mg-Al-Ca-Mn alloy under high strain rate compression in different compression directions. The alloy exhibited strong strain rate sensitivity, with compressive strength increasing significantly and deformation ability improving with higher strain rates. When compressed along the extrusion direction, the total absorbed energy, crush force efficiency, and specific energy absorption of the Mg-Al-Ca-Mn alloy were greatly improved compared to other compression directions.

Characteristics of the Mg-Zn-Ca-Gd Alloy after Mechanical Alloying

Sabina Lesz et al.

Summary: Magnesium-based materials show great potential for medical implants, but proper alloying elements and methods are crucial for enhancement. Mechanical alloying is an effective method for designing alloys with desired structures and properties. The hardness of the materials is found to be correlated with the milling time and particle size during the mechanical alloying process.

Stress relaxations during cyclic loading-unloading in precipitation hardened Mg-4.5Zn

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of aging on cyclic loading-unloading responses of extruded Mg-Zn alloys, revealing that aging has complex effects on twinning and slip behavior. Aged samples promote twinning over slip during loading and experience additional 'forward' twinning upon unloading. Furthermore, aging leads to noticeable ratchetting strain compared to non-aged samples.

Summary: In this study, a new biodegradable Mg-Zn-Cu magnesium alloy was introduced for biological applications. Addition of 0.1wt.% Cu was found to enhance corrosion resistance, with extruded alloys displaying better corrosion resistance behavior compared to cast alloys. The Mg-2Zn-0.1Cu alloy was identified as a potential candidate for use as a biodegradable magnesium implant due to its improved tensile properties.

Effects of Zn/Al mass ratio on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Mg-Sn based alloys

Yuxiao Luo et al.

Summary: The effects of Zn/Al mass ratio on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the Mg-3Sn-5Zn-xAl (x=0,1,2,3 wt%) alloy were systematically investigated. The addition of Al led to improved tensile yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, but slightly reduced the volume fraction of recrystallized region. The excellent ductility of the extruded alloys was attributed to the activation of non-basal slip systems, high volume fraction of fine DRXed grains, and weakened texture.

Summary: The study found that magnesium-copper alloys with low copper content and solid solution treatment exhibit better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, while alloys with higher copper content are prone to corrosion. The decrease in Mg2Cu phase content in the solid solution treated alloys leads to improved corrosion resistance and better biocompatibility.
