Recent advances of cold plasma technology for water and soil remediation: A critical review

Christos A. Aggelopoulos

Summary: Cold plasma as a promising remediation method shows high environmental compatibility and energy efficiency, but still faces challenges in maximizing the production of reactive species, increasing the contact area between plasma and pollutants, and ensuring feasibility in real life conditions. Efforts have been made to develop different plasma remediation systems for optimal results, but critical factors and limitations still need to be addressed for effective industrial implementation.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks for the removal of heavy metal oxoanions from water

Xiaoliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent progress in using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents to remove heavy metal oxoanions from water, covering different types of oxoanions and adsorption mechanisms. MOFs, with advantages such as tunable porosity, high surface area, and abundant functional groups, are considered superior to conventional adsorbents.

Preparation of CoFe2O4/MWNTs/sponge electrode to enhance dielectric barrier plasma discharge for degradation of phenylic pollutants and Cr(VI) reduction

Yupei Long et al.

Summary: The CoFe2O4/MWNTs/sponge electrodes were prepared by co-adsorption of CoFe2O4 nanowires and multiwalled carbon nanotubes onto a sponge, enhancing discharge performance in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor. The system showed high energy utilization efficiency, efficient degradation of phenylic pollutants, and simultaneous removal of hexavalent chromium. Photocatalytic and Fenton-like reactions induced by CoFe2O4 nanowires contributed to the enhanced degradation and reduction processes.

Removal of metal ions from water using oxygen plasma

Sayma Khanom et al.

Summary: In this study, zinc ions dissolved in water were attempted to be removed by generating zinc oxides using oxygen gas in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system. The removal rate of zinc oxides production was measured at different treatment periods, showing an initial increase followed by a decrease with treatment time. The optimal removal rate of zinc ions from water (29%) was achieved at a treatment period of 10 minutes, with a lower pH (7.4). The study indicates that controlling the penetration amount of active oxygens to keep the pH below 7.5 is crucial for effectively removing zinc ions and preventing a decrease in removal rate of zinc oxides' deposit.

Optimization of Ni(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) Ion Adsorption Conditions on Pliocene Clays from Post-Mining Waste

Beata Jablonska

Summary: The study explores the utilization of Pliocene clays as adsorbents for removing Pb(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) ions from wastewater. Optimal adsorption conditions were determined to be pH 6-7 and 18-24 g/dm(3) of adsorbent dose. The clays demonstrated good sorption properties for the tested metal ions and could be effectively used in water and wastewater treatment.

Effect of Mining Activity in Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Soil and Plant (Urtica dioica L)

Kemajl Bislimi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that contamination of soil and different parts of the Urtica dionica L plant with heavy metals such as Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu, and Fe was significantly higher in the contaminated site compared to the uncontaminated site. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the distribution of metals within the study area, showing that Urtica dionica L has a strong translocation capacity for heavy metals, especially to its leaves. Levels of heavy metals in the soil and Urtica dionica L exceeded UK and Germany standards.
