GDM-complicated pregnancies: focus on adipokines

Marta Mallardo et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious complication of pregnancy characterized by glucose intolerance. Insulin resistance and pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction are key factors in its pathogenesis. Maternal metabolism undergoes significant changes in normal and high-risk pregnancies, with potential complications.

FGF21 Serum Levels in the Early Second Trimester Are Positively Correlated With the Risk of Subsequent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Propensity-Matched Nested Case-Control Study

Zhiheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that serum FGF21 levels in women with GDM increased in the early second trimester, regardless of BMI subgroups. After adjusting for confounding factors, FGF21 levels in the highest quartile were associated with more than three times higher probability of GDM diagnosis compared to levels in the first quartile.
