Modeling the impact of obesity on cost of hip and knee arthroplasty

Samira Barbara Jabakhanji et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the proportions of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) attributable to obesity in Ireland and the associated hospital costs. Results showed that obesity contributed to 43% of TKA and 20% of THA procedures in 2015, costing Euro16.0 million out of Euro52.1 million of hospital costs. Effective obesity control could potentially decrease the demand for joint replacements and associated costs.

The influence of bariatric surgery on hip and knee joint pain: a systematic review

Elise A. F. Heuts et al.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the influence of bariatric surgery on hip and knee joint pain in obese individuals, with results suggesting a positive impact. However, conclusive evidence is lacking due to potential bias in the majority of included studies. Well-designed randomized controlled trials using standardized joint pain measures are needed for further evaluation.
