Electrocatalytic Oxidative Hydrofunctionalization Reactions of Alkenes via Co(II/III/IV) Cycle

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: A general Co(II/III/IV) electrocatalytic platform for alkene functionalization is proposed, enabling a set of oxidative hydrofunctionalization reactions via hydrogen atom transfer without stoichiometric chemical oxidants. The study demonstrates an expansion in reactivity space in electrocatalysis by going beyond the common oxidation states of Co(I/II/III) in the VB12 system.

A Triple Photoredox/Cobalt/Bronsted Acid Catalysis Enabling Markovnikov Hydroalkoxylation of Unactivated Alkenes

Masanari Nakagawa et al.

Summary: We have demonstrated the Markovnikov hydroalkoxylation of unactivated alkenes using alcohols through a triple catalysis involving photoredox, cobalt, and Brönsted acid catalysts. This triple catalysis allows the realization of three key elementary steps in a single catalytic cycle: Co(III) hydride generation, metal hydride hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT), and oxidation of the alkyl Co(III) complex. The precise control of protons and electrons by the three catalysts eliminates the need for strong acids and external reductants/oxidants in the conventional methods.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Radical Hydroamination of Alkenes with N-Fluorobenzenesulfonimides

Tao Qin et al.

Summary: An efficient and general radical hydroamination of alkenes has been achieved using Co(salen) as catalyst, NFSI and its analogues as both nitrogen source and oxidant. Mechanistic experiments indicate that the reaction proceeds through a metal-hydride-mediated hydrogen atom transfer and a catalyst-controlled S(N)2-like pathway. Additionally, an unprecedented asymmetric version with good to excellent enantiocontrol was accomplished using a modified chiral cobalt(II)-salen catalyst.

Electrophotocatalytic diamination of vicinal C-H bonds

Tao Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, alkylated arenes underwent vicinal C-H diamination reactions through an electrophotocatalytic strategy, forming 1,2-diamine derivatives. The reaction was catalyzed by a trisaminocyclopropenium (TAC) ion, generating stable radical dications and resulting in either 3,4-dihydroimidazole or aziridine products depending on the electrolyte used.

Electrophotocatalytic Acetoxyhydroxylation of Aryl Olefins

He Huang et al.

Summary: A method for acetoxyhydroxylation of olefins with syn stereoselectivity under electrophotocatalytic conditions using a TAC ion catalyst has been developed. The reaction, catalyzed by visible light irradiation at controlled electrochemical potential, converts aryl olefins to glycol monoesters with high chemo- and diastereoselectivity. It can be carried out in batch or flow, enabling the synthesis of multigram quantities of the monoester products.

Highly chemoselective synthesis of hindered amides via cobalt-catalyzed intermolecular oxidative hydroamidation

Yun-Nian Yin et al.

Summary: The authors have developed a single-step approach for the synthesis of α-tertiary amides via cobalt-catalyzed intermolecular oxidative hydroamidation of unactivated alkenes. This method shows good selectivity for terminal alkenes and avoids competing reactions with other functional groups, providing a straightforward access to a diverse array of hindered amides.

Electro-mediated PhotoRedox Catalysis for Selective C(sp3)-O Cleavages of Phosphinated Alcohols to Carbanions

Xianhai Tian et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel electro-mediated photoredox catalysis for the reductive cleavage of C(sp(3))-O bonds, allowing for the conversion of phosphinated alcohols to alkyl carbanions. In addition to deoxygenations, E-selective olefinations are reported, which can be made Z-selective in a tandem reduction/photosensitization process. Spectroscopy, computation, and catalyst structural variations reveal that the new naphthalene monoimide-type catalyst facilitates an intimate dispersive precomplexation with the phosphinate substrate, promoting the reactivity-determining C(sp(3))-O cleavage. Surprisingly, this method tolerates aryl chlorides/bromides and does not lead to Birch-type reductions, unlike previously reported photoexcited radical anion chemistries.
