Crustal Structure of the Incoming Iquique Ridge Offshore Northern Chile

E. K. Myers et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical properties and structural variability of the Iquique Ridge offshore northern Chile, and finds that the ridge has a thickened crust and reduced upper crustal seismic velocities, which may have potential implications for the slip behavior at depth.

Seismic images of the Northern Chilean subduction zone at 19°40′S, prior to the 2014 Iquique earthquake

Ina Storch et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Northern Chilean subduction zone involved detailed geological investigations and data analysis, revealing pre-earthquake geological features, proposing views on plate interface reflectivity variations, and observing complex seismic activities between plates. The research results also revealed the existence of two distinct geological units beneath the continental slope, with seismic activities used to infer interactions between plates.

Relationship Between Subduction Erosion and the Up-Dip Limit of the 2014 Mw 8.1 Iquique Earthquake

Florian Petersen et al.

Summary: The aftershock distribution of the 2014 Mw 8.1 Iquique earthquake offshore northern Chile suggests that seismic activity updip of the main earthquake area reflects active subduction erosion processes. The lack of sediment accretion and subduction erosion over millions of years has resulted in a very weak and aseismic frontal wedge. This study links shallow subduction zone seismicity to subduction erosion processes controlling the evolution of the overriding plate.

Slip rate deficit and earthquake potential on shallow megathrusts

Eric O. Lindsey et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method to infer the slip rate deficit of offshore megathrusts, providing better understanding of seismic slip behavior. It reveals that the shallow fault generally has a slip rate deficit between 80% and 100% of the plate convergence rate when locked patches are present. This finding suggests a potentially higher global tsunami hazard than currently recognized.
