Connectivity of Fennoscandian Shield terrestrial deep biosphere microbiomes with surface communities

George Westmeijer et al.

Summary: This study found that the microbial communities in deep biosphere groundwaters are mainly comprised of autochthonous species, rather than migratory surface representatives.

A new conceptual framework for the transformation of groundwater dissolved organic matter

Liza K. McDonough et al.

Summary: Groundwater contains a diverse mix of dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules, which undergo different degradation pathways compared to those in marine, river, and lake systems. The degradation of groundwater DOM has significant implications for the global carbon cycle.

Effect of tectonic processes on biosphere-geosphere feedbacks across a convergent margin

Katherine M. Fullerton et al.

Summary: This study suggests that bacterial communities in the subsurface across the Costa Rican margin are influenced by deep tectonic processes and may play a role in reducing carbon transfer to the mantle. Through chemolithoautotrophic bacteria fixing CO2 derived from subducted slabs, the subsurface ecosystem could potentially sequester a significant amount of carbon, impacting the geosphere.

Rock-Hosted Subsurface Biofilms: Mineral Selectivity Drives Hotspots for Intraterrestrial Life

Caitlin P. Casar et al.

Summary: The study suggests that mineral selectivity by biofilms in a deep continental subsurface setting can have a significant impact on biofilm distribution, with the potential to influence fluid geochemistry at a kilometer scale. Additionally, rock-hosted biofilms likely play a substantial role in subsurface biogeochemical cycles globally, highlighting the importance of considering host rock mineralogy in estimates of biomass in the continental subsurface.

Crustal Groundwater Volumes Greater Than Previously Thought

Grant Ferguson et al.

Summary: This study estimates the total volume of groundwater in the upper 10 km of the Earth's continental crust, revealing that deep groundwater has a volume comparable to that of groundwater in the upper 2 km. These findings have important implications for water resource management and waste water treatment.

Energy efficiency and biological interactions define the core microbiome of deep oligotrophic groundwater

Sulfurization of dissolved organic matter in the anoxic water column of the Black Sea

Gonzalo V. Gomez-Saez et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic carbon in today's oceans is an important component of the global carbon cycle, with anoxic marine environments possibly contributing to its preservation through reactions with sulfur species. Studies show that in the sulfidic waters of the Black Sea, dissolved organic sulfur is largely formed within the water column, indicating potential long-lasting effects on global climate.

The Bioavailability of Dissolved, Particulate, and Adsorbed Organic Carbon in Groundwater Systems

Francis H. Chapelle

Summary: The bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater may indicate the bioavailability of the associated particulate organic carbon (POC) and adsorbed organic carbon (AOC) compartments, simplifying the evaluation process of total organic carbon present in groundwater systems. This hypothesis was confirmed through comparing DOC bioavailability between aquifers with differing POC/AOC sources of various geologic ages and measuring POC/AOC bioavailability in sediments from two aquifers before and after introducing bioavailable DOC. The results support the idea that DOC bioavailability in groundwater reflects the bioavailability of associated POC and AOC compartments.
