Explosivity of basaltic lava fountains is controlled by magma rheology, ascent rate and outgassing

G. La Spina et al.

Summary: The study uses a numerical model to investigate the controls on basaltic eruption style, focusing on Kilauea and Etna as case studies. Results suggest that lava fountaining is a distinct style, separate from effusive and explosive eruption styles. High lava fountains occur when the bubbly magma's Reynolds number is greater than approximately 0.1 and the bulk viscosity is less than 10(6) Pas.

Parameterization of clinopyroxene growth kinetics via crystal size distribution (CSD) analysis: Insights into the temporal scales of magma dynamics at Mt. Etna volcano

Piergiorgio Moschini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that clinopyroxene crystallization from mafic alkaline magmas is influenced by complex dynamic processes, with experimental results showing that different pressures, temperatures, volatile contents, and equilibration times can lead to crystals with varying textures and sizes. The transition between different growth regimes and the timing of clinopyroxene crystallization in natural samples provide insights into the cooling-decompression paths of Etnean magmas within a highly dynamic plumbing system.

In situ quantification of crystallisation kinetics of plagioclase and clinopyroxene in basaltic magma: Implications for lava flow

Nolwenn Le Gall et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of crystallisation kinetics on lava flow behavior by using real-time synchrotron X-ray microtomography to observe the nucleation and growth of clinopyroxene and plagioclase in oxidised, nominally anhydrous basaltic magma. It was found that under continuous cooling, the onset of key transitions in lava hardening occurred within a shorter timeframe, demonstrating the potential of real-time synchrotron X-ray tomography in analyzing the solidification history of basaltic lavas.

Crystal growth of clinopyroxene in mafic alkaline magmas

Jin-Sheng Zhou et al.

Summary: Recent studies have identified a new crystal growth mechanism for clinopyroxene in mafic alkaline magmas, revealing that at low degrees of undercooling, all crystal faces grow concurrently, producing disequilibrium Al-Ti-rich {hk0} sectors; while at high degrees of undercooling, equilibrium sectors {hk0} initially form, followed by backfill of disequilibrium Al-rich {-111} sectors. These findings contribute to a better understanding of magma storage, ascent, and eruption based on clinopyroxene.

Out-of-sequence skeletal growth causing oscillatory zoning in arc olivines

Pablo Salas et al.

Summary: Primitive olivines from monogenetic cones in the Central-South Andes show dendritic, skeletal, and polyhedral growth textures, with high Fo-Ni cores contrasting with dendritic olivines, indicating sequential nucleation. A new growth model suggests rapid olivine growth through concentric addition of crystal frames, leaving behind compositional boundary layers that subsequently fill in with Fo-Ni-depleted olivine, causing reversals. Elemental diffusion modeling reveals individual crystal frame growth and eruption at the surface occurring over 3.5-40 days, constraining magma ascent rates and suggesting differences in textures between magmas erupted in arc settings compared to ocean island basalts.
