Effect of Welding Speed on Microstructure and Anisotropic Properties of Wire-Arc Additive-Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Guo Xian et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of welding speed on the grain structure and tensile strength of Ti64 alloy was investigated through experiments and numerical simulations. It was found that a faster welding speed resulted in more equiaxed grains and lower anisotropic tensile strength, while slower welding speeds led to slower grain formation and more complex shapes.

Additive manufacturing of Ti-Ni bimetallic structures

Ali Afrouzian et al.

Summary: Bimetallic structures of nickel and commercially pure titanium were successfully manufactured through directed energy deposition metal additive manufacturing, exhibiting different mechanical properties in different configurations. The formation of intermetallic NiTi phase at the interface was confirmed, and a microstructural gradient was observed in the heat-affected zone. The longitudinal and transverse samples showed significant differences in elongation, with the longitudinal samples demonstrating brittle fracture failure during compressive deformation, while the transverse samples exhibited ductile failure.

Effects of Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Behavior of Udimet 720 Nickel-Based Superalloy

Yu Sik Kong et al.

Summary: The microstructure formation of nickel-based superalloys significantly affects their mechanical properties, especially the presence and characteristics of the γ' phase. This study investigates the influence of heat treatment conditions on the microstructural and mechanical properties of Udimet 720. The results show that thermal exposure alters the microstructure, leading to a deterioration in the tensile and creep-rupture properties of the alloy.

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MIG WELDING MODES ON HARD-FACING OF INCONEL 718 ON 321 STAINLESS STEEL

Karpagaraj Anbalagan et al.

Summary: In this study, the metal inert gas (MIG) welding process was used to deposit Inconel 718 on 321 stainless steel. Different modes and parameters were tested to find the optimal MIG welding mode. The results showed that the DC-pulsed mode was qualified for making the metal deposition, and defect-free 2-mm-thick layer depositions were successfully achieved on the 321 stainless steel surfaces.

Additive manufacturing of bimetallic structures

Amit Bandyopadhyay et al.

Summary: Bimetallic structures are in high demand for current industrial applications due to their unique properties. However, welding techniques face challenges in joining dissimilar metals, leading to heat-affected zone management and brittle intermetallic phase issues. Metal additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a promising solution for processing bimetallic structures. This review provides insights into various processing strategies, challenges, and future directions for the implementation of AM technologies in bimetallic structures.

An experimental investigation and neuro-fuzzy modeling to ascertain metal deposition parameters for the wire arc additive manufacturing of Incoloy 825

Bharat Kumar Chigilipalli et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is a critical technology for repairing, rebuilding, and rapidly manufacturing major components. In this study, the wire arc additive manufacturing technique using metal inert gas welding was experimented on Incoloy 825, proving it to be a cost-effective method for producing large-scale parts. The effects of input parameters on bead geometry were analyzed, and a neural fuzzy inference system was implemented for predicting geometrical characteristics. The results showed that the subtractive clustering fuzzy inference model performed the best in predicting the deposited bead geometry as a function of process parameters. The study also successfully constructed a single-pass multi-layer wall of Incoloy 825 using the identified optimum parameters, demonstrating the high quality of the built structure.

Influence of joint interface on mechanical properties in dissimilar friction welds

Muralimohan Cheepu et al.

Summary: Friction welding is a solid-state joining process that provides sound welds without cracks. In this study, the dissimilar join of austenitic stainless steel to high tensile alloy steel was achieved using friction welding. The thickness of the intermixing zone in the welds was found to have an effect on the mechanical properties.
