Plant growth and calcium and potassium accumulation in lettuce under different nitrogen regimes of ammonium and nitrate nutrition

Sara Weil et al.

Summary: The study found that providing more than 50% of the total nitrogen as ammonium-N in hydroponic nutrient solutions significantly inhibited growth and accumulation of calcium and potassium in lettuce. The acidity of the nutrient solution increased as the proportion of ammonium-N increased. While applying calcium carbonate buffering improved growth in solutions containing ammonium, it did not reach the growth and nutrient accumulation levels achieved with solely nitrate nutrition.

Enhancement of cadmium accumulation in sweet sorghum as affected by nitrate

Z. Q. Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that optimal nitrate supply enhances Cd accumulation in the aboveground parts of sweet sorghum, mainly due to increased dry weight and Cd concentration. However, root-to-shoot Cd translocation was not increased by nitrate, with some Cd transferring from cell walls to vacuoles in leaves. The expression of SbNRT1.1B in relation to nitrate transport showed an inverted 'U' shape with increasing nitrate levels under Cd stress, which was consistent with changes in Cd concentration in aboveground tissues.

Seed Yield and Nitrogen Efficiency in Oilseed Rape After Ammonium Nitrate or Urea Fertilization

Diana Heuermann et al.

Summary: In agricultural plant production, nitrate, ammonium, and urea are the major fertilized nitrogen forms that affect root uptake and downstream signaling processes differently in plants. Ammonium nitrate-based nutrition tends to increase seed yield compared to urea-based nutrition, but differences in nitrogen use efficiency are not consistently different between the two nitrogen forms. Nitrogen forms can impact grain yield through phytohormones, with ammonium nitrate enhancing translocation of nitrate and total nitrogen along with cytokinins.

Root morphology and ammonium uptake kinetics in two traditional rice varieties submitted to different doses of ammonium nutrition

Erinaldo Gomes Pereira et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the root morphology, ammonium uptake kinetics, and nitrogen accumulation in two upland rice varieties from Maranhao, Brazil. The varieties exhibited contrasting behaviors in response to different doses of ammonium, with Piaui showing better growth under low doses and Manteiga performing better under higher doses.

Soil Sulfur Sources Differentially Enhance Cadmium Tolerance in Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Iqbal R. Mir et al.

Summary: The study found that sulfur application to soil can alleviate the negative impact of cadmium on plants by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and reducing glutathione content, thereby strengthening the defense mechanism against cadmium.
