Function and Plasticity of Electrical Synapses in the Mammalian Brain: Role of Non-Junctional Mechanisms

Sebastian Curti et al.

Summary: In this article, the basic physical principles of electrical transmission between neurons and the plasticity of electrical synapses are reviewed. Circuits of electrically coupled neurons can perform sophisticated operations and can be modulated to alter circuit function.

Intrinsic Sources and Functional Impacts of Asymmetry at Electrical Synapses

Austin J. Mendoza et al.

Summary: Electrical synapses between inhibitory neurons in the brain have diverse sources and impacts of asymmetry, which can modulate spike timing and synchrony. The location of the synapse along a dendrite, as well as other factors like input and dendritic resistance, influence the asymmetry. These findings highlight the importance of considering electrical synapse asymmetry in experimental and simulated networks.

Anatomical distribution and functional roles of electrical synapses in Drosophila

Georg Ammer et al.

Summary: This study provides an immunohistochemistry-based anatomical map of all innexin gap junction proteins in the central nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster. The expression of these proteins is found in glial cells as well as neurons, with shakB being the most widely expressed computation for direction selectivity.

Photoreceptive Ganglion Cells Drive Circuits for Local Inhibition in the Mouse Retina

Joseph Pottackal et al.

Summary: In this study, a circuitry was identified in mice that allows M5 ipRGCs to locally inhibit retinal neurons by forming electrical synapses with nonspiking GABAergic amacrine cells. The results demonstrate a functional role for electrical synapses in translating ipRGC activity into feedforward and feedback inhibition of local retinal circuits.

Activity-dependent long-term potentiation of electrical synapses in the mammalian thalamus

Brandon Fricker et al.

Summary: This study reveals that specific forms of activity in coupled neurons can result in long-term potentiation of mammalian electrical synapses, which is asymmetrical and dependent on calcium flux. A bidirectional calcium-based rule for plasticity of electrical synapses is proposed, similar to those demonstrated for chemical synapses. These insights shed light on how electrical synapse plasticity may modify neural circuits incorporating them.

Gap Junctions Between Striatal D1 Neurons and Cholinergic Interneurons

Yuqi Ren et al.

Summary: The striatum is involved in various behaviors and its D1-type projection neurons are directly electrically coupled to cholinergic interneurons (ChIs), in addition to chemical transmission. Activation of D1 neurons promotes basal activity of ChIs through gap junctions, contributing to the maintenance of ChIs' tonically active firing patterns.
