A field trial to test the efficiency of induced partial saturation and horizontal drains to mitigate the susceptibility of soils to liquefaction

A. Flora et al.

Summary: The study focused on experimental verification of two techniques (induced partial saturation and horizontal drains) in mitigating soil liquefaction susceptibility. The research found that both techniques were effective in preventing liquefaction, with efficiency closely related to the arrangement of horizontal drains and the induced degree of saturation.

New Approach to Concurrent Vs and Vp Measurements Using Bender Elements

Cristiana Ferreira et al.

Summary: Bender elements (BEs) have become a common geotechnical laboratory tool for measuring seismic wave velocities, with the advantage of simultaneously measuring small- and large-strain soil stiffnesses. Although there is a standardized procedure for BE testing, the simultaneous measurement of V-p and V-s using high-frequency pulses is not considered, but this study shows that it can be advantageous for evaluating P-wave velocities.

Effect of saturation on the characteristics of P-wave and S-wave propagation in nearly saturated soils using bender elements

Xiaoqiang Gu et al.

Summary: Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to investigate the characteristics of P-wave and S-wave propagation in soils with different degrees of saturation. It was found that the evolutions of wave velocities with the degree of saturation are quite different, and P-wave signals in nearly saturated soil contain two components - a fast P-wave component and a slow P-wave (Biot-wave). The relationship between P-wave velocity and B-value depends on the characteristics of the pore fluid, with de-aired water leading to independence and tap water causing an increase in Vp with B-value up to 0.85.
