T-cell responses to MERS coronavirus infection in people with occupational exposure to dromedary camels in Nigeria: an observational cohort study

Chris Ka Pun Mok et al.

Summary: This study found evidence of MERS-CoV infection in individuals exposed to dromedaries in Nigeria, indicating that the extent of MERS-CoV infections in Africa is underestimated.

Reinfection With SARS-CoV-2: Implications for Vaccines

Jeffrey Cohen et al.

Summary: The likelihood and duration of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 remain uncertain, as current knowledge on this topic is limited. Studies on other respiratory viruses suggest that serum antibodies typically persist for only a few months to a few years, making reinfections common. These findings have implications for vaccine development and the need for continued protective measures.

Monitoring of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Activity in a Secluded Herd of Camels Kept Under Field Conditions

Tariq A. Madani et al.

Summary: This study monitored a herd of 20 pregnant female camels and their neonate calves, finding that some calves were infected with MERS-CoV, resulting in symptoms like fever, shivering, and flu, some even leading to death. Additionally, some of the female camels also tested positive for MERS-CoV, helping to understand the epidemiology of MERS-CoV among camels.

High real-time reporting of domestic and wild animal diseases following rollout of mobile phone reporting system in Kenya

M. Kariuki Njenga et al.

Summary: An open-source mobile phone-based animal disease reporting system was successfully implemented in Kenya, leading to a significant increase in disease reports among both domestic and wild animals. The user-friendly and secure system can be potentially rolled out in other countries in sub-Saharan Africa to improve disease reporting and preparedness for zoonotic disease epidemics.

Phenotypic and genetic characterization of MERS coronaviruses from Africa to understand their zoonotic potential

Ziqi Zhou et al.

Summary: The study revealed that coronaviruses from Africa have lower replication competence, leading to reduced virus activity in human lung cell cultures and experimentally infected mouse lungs. Additionally, the spike protein of African subtype viruses was associated with decreased virus entry into respiratory cells, resulting in lower virus replication competence in vitro and in vivo.

Low-Level Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus among Camel Handlers, Kenya, 2019

Peninah M. Munyua et al.

Summary: Although the seroprevalence of Middle East respiratory coronavirus syndrome is high among camels in Africa, zoonotic transmission has not been detected in Kenya. A study following 262 camel handlers in Kenya from April 2018 to March 2020 found 3 asymptomatic handlers with PCR-confirmed Middle East respiratory coronavirus syndrome.
