Epidemiology of trichinellosis in the People's Republic of China during 2009-2020

Summary: This review analyzes the epidemiological data of human and animal Trichinella infection in China from 2009 to 2020. The results show that the southwestern region of China is the main focus of human trichinellosis, with pork being the primary source of transmission and small backyard farms and outdoor free-ranging pigs being the source of infection. To prevent trichinellosis, improvements in pig-rearing practices, development of industrialized pig farms, and mandatory inspection of slaughtered pigs are recommended.

Scientific achievements of the last 60 years: From a single to a multispecies concept of the genus Trichinella

Summary: The development of the multispecies concept within the Trichinella genus in the 1950s was based on increasing host-specific peculiarities among different geographic isolates. Russian scientists described three new species in 1972, opening up the idea that the genus Trichinella was not monospecific and widening the host range. Over the past 27 years, new technologies and investigations have led to the description of four new species and two new genotypes, with some taxonomic issues still unresolved. These advancements have also enhanced phylogenetic, zoogeographical, and epidemiological knowledge for future studies.
