Gastric Cancer, Version 2.2022

Jaffer A. Ajani et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with over 95% being adenocarcinomas. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to a poor prognosis. However, systemic therapy can alleviate symptoms, improve survival, and enhance quality of life. The implementation of biomarker testing has significantly impacted clinical practice and patient care. Targeted therapies have shown encouraging results in clinical trials. Palliative management is recommended for patients with unresectable or metastatic cancer.

Lymph node ratio-based the ypTNrM staging system for gastric cancer after neoadjuvant therapy: a large population-based study

Jia-Xian Chen et al.

Summary: The study compared node ratio (Nr) staging with ypN staging and found that the ypTNrM staging system had better prognostic predictive power and a lower misclassification rate compared to the ypTNM staging system.

High Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index is an Adverse Prognostic Factor for Patients With Gastroesophageal Adenocarcinoma

Gerd Jomrich et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the clinical role of the systemic immune-inflammation index in patients with resectable adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction treated with or without neoadjuvant therapy. The findings showed that elevated SII is an independent adverse prognostic factor in patients with resectable gastroesophageal adenocarcinomas with and without neoadjuvant treatment.

Concurrent lymphovascular and perineural invasion after preoperative therapy for gastric adenocarcinoma is associated with decreased survival

Summary: The study found that gastric cancer patients with concurrent lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and perineural invasion (PNI) after preoperative therapy have more advanced disease and worse survival outcomes than patients with neither or only one of these factors.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

A Novel Approach for Gastric Cancer Staging in Elderly Patients Based on the Lymph Node Ratio

Summary: This study developed a new N staging system based on lymph node ratio (LNR) for elderly patients with gastric cancer, showing that LNR staging is more valuable than N staging in predicting prognosis.

Summary: This study demonstrated that LNR is an independent prognostic factor for survival of patients with gastric cancer after preoperative chemotherapy, and may serve as an alternative predictor for ypN stage.
