The role of lymphadenectomy in the surgical treatment of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A review

Carlo Sposito et al.

Summary: Cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary tumor of the liver, and surgical resection is the only curative treatment available. There is no prospective evidence supporting neoadjuvant systemic treatments for resectable cases, while adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended after liver resection. However, cholangiocarcinoma still has a high incidence of recurrence and poor long-term survival.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is associated with improved survival in patients undergoing hepatic resection for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

Thomas L. Sutton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) with oncologic outcomes in 52 patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) undergoing hepatectomy. The results showed that NAC was independently associated with improved overall survival in ICC patients, but not recurrence-free survival. Additionally, NAC was not associated with major post-operative complications or margin status.

Summary: The laparoscopic approach did not significantly improve the quality of care for resectable ICC patients compared to open surgery, with lower rates of lymph node dissection and adjusted textbook outcome in laparoscopic resection.
