Impacts of Heterogeneity on Aquifer Storage and Recovery in Saline Aquifers

Hongkai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of aquifer heterogeneity on the mixing of freshwater and saltwater in aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) operations. The results show that aquifer heterogeneity plays a significant role in ASR performance, with higher variance in hydraulic conductivity leading to stronger freshwater-saltwater mixing and lower recovery efficiency. Buoyancy is identified as a major factor in reducing recovery efficiency, but heterogeneity can mitigate this effect and even lead to higher efficiency in some cases.

Contaminant transport in heterogeneous aquifers: A critical review of mechanisms and numerical methods of non-Fickian dispersion

Zhilin Guo et al.

Summary: Natural aquifers often display complex physical and chemical heterogeneities, leading to anomalous transport phenomena. This anomalous transport can cause continuous deterioration of water quality and rapid spreading of pollutants, as well as constraining the efficacy of groundwater remediation. Comprehensive studies on the impacts of non-Fickian dispersion on contaminant transport and remediation are still needed.

Aquifer Storage and Recovery in Layered Saline Aquifers: Importance of Layer-Arrangements

Hongkai Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the impact of layer arrangements on multi-cycle ASR in heterogeneous scenarios, revealing significant variations in convection and mixing phenomena. Different layer arrangements result in varying RE values, with the method of homogenizing hydraulic conductivities among layers shown to overestimate RE. Consideration of the geometric arrangement of layers is crucial in assessing the feasibility of ASR operations in brackish-to-saline layered aquifers.
