Analysis of spatiotemporal variations of drought and its correlations with remote sensing-based indices via wavelet analysis and clustering methods

Roghayeh Ghasempour et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal pattern of drought in the northwest part of Iran using ground- and satellite-based datasets. The results showed that the MODWT-EEMD-K-means method successfully identified homogenous drought areas and significant statistical correlations were found between the applied satellite-based indices and ground-based drought index within a certain period.

Investigating remote sensing indices to monitor drought impacts on a local scale (case study: Fars province, Iran)

Omidreza Mikaili et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of satellite vegetation indices in monitoring agricultural drought. The results show that NDVI-based indices have the highest correlation with drought on a long-term timescale in cold climates, while VCI is the most effective index for studying agricultural drought in different climate regions.

The Impacts of Drought on the Health and Demography of Eastern Grey Kangaroos

Loic Quentin Juillard et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of drought on eastern grey kangaroo populations, finding that body condition declined and fewer males were observed as environmental conditions became more extreme. The proportion of juveniles increased when more favorable conditions returned. Kangaroos with poor body conditions were more likely to become hosts to ticks, while higher parasite egg burdens in feces occurred in autumn.

Phenological and seismological impacts on airborne pollen types: A case study of Olea pollen in the Region of Murcia, Mediterranean Spanish climate

L. Negral et al.

Summary: The rationale of this paper was to investigate whether earthquakes impact airborne pollen concentrations, considering some meteorological parameters. The study found that only Lorca city in the Region of Murcia showed differences in Olea pollen concentrations on days with and without earthquakes. However, the low frequency and intensity of earthquakes explained these results.

Parched and impatient: Political engagement after drought

Hannah Melville-Rea

Summary: This study reveals that voters in drought-exposed regions of Australia prioritize individual economic security over climate-mitigation policies, and regional micro-parties in drought-affected areas gain vote share. This suggests that voters at the front-lines of climate change seek immediate and local economic relief.

Evaluating Performance and Applicability of Several Drought Indices in Arid Regions

Mohammad Mehdi Moghimi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the problem of calculating drought indices in regions with insufficient data for evapotranspiration by simulating monthly Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) using other indices. The results showed that the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Crop Moisture Index (CZI), Modified CZI (MCZI), and Drought Index (DI) were the most suitable for simulating RDI. The application of SPI to simulate RDI showed no significant difference between observed and simulated data series in all stations.

Comparative evaluation of drought indices for monitoring drought based on remote sensing data

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the applicability of different drought indices for monitoring drought events in China. It found that VCI and TCI are better for monitoring long-term drought conditions, while SPI-1 has a higher correlation with PCI for short-term drought monitoring. SMCI has better correlation with short-term in situ drought index. Correlations with combined drought indices were better than with single drought indices.

Analysis of Meteorological Drought Resilience and Risk Assessment of Groundwater Using Signal Analysis Method

Yuan-Chien Lin et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel approach for drought risk assessment based on the Hilbert Huang Transform method to understand the spatial distribution of groundwater-related drought risk. The results classified the main time-frequency characteristics, groundwater availability, and drought risk levels in each region, showing that coastal areas and alluvial fan areas have the highest and lowest drought risk levels, respectively. These findings can be valuable for water management, drought resilience, sustainable groundwater development, and decision-making in drought risk assessment.

Beyond the traditional NDVI index as a key factor to mainstream the use of UAV in precision viticulture

Alessandro Matese et al.

Summary: The exponential growth of research on the identification of correlations between vegetational indices from UAV imagery and vine parameters has been noted in the last decade. The study evaluates the potential of new canopy geometry-based indices for characterizing agronomic parameters compared to traditional NDVI, and focuses on developing a rapid yield forecast methodology based on UAV data. With the canopy thickness showing high performance in regression models and machine learning models reaching an average accuracy of 85.95% in yield prediction, the feasibility of this research as a global yield model has been confirmed through accurate validation in different vineyards over multiple years.
