Die-off of plant pathogenic bacteria in tile drainage and anoxic water from a managed aquifer recharge site

Carina Eisfeld et al.

Summary: Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is effective in removing potentially present plant pathogens to prevent crop diseases. The survival of three plant pathogenic bacteria varied under different water qualities and temperatures, and a modified Weibull model was reliable in predicting their die-off process.

Attenuation and transport of human enteric viruses and bacteriophage MS2 in alluvial sand and gravel aquifer media-laboratory studies

Liping Pang et al.

Summary: Research found differences in removal of norovirus and MS2 bacteriophage in different subsurface media under laboratory conditions. Modelling results indicated that the detachment rates of MS2 were similar to norovirus, but one order of magnitude faster than those of rotavirus and adenovirus. These findings highlight the impact of reversible virus attachment on virus transport in subsurface media.

Reactive transport modelling of push-pull tests: A versatile approach to quantify aquifer reactivity

Emiel Kruisdijk et al.

Summary: The study utilized push-pull tests and reactive transport modeling to analyze nutrient fate and redox processes controlling groundwater quality, revealing the main reductants and dominant reduction pathways. The approach provided a better understanding of reaction networks and kinetics governing water quality changes.

Upscaling Transport of Bacillus subtilis Endospores and Coliphage phiX174 in Heterogeneous Porous Media from the Column to the Field Scale

Thomas J. Oudega et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination and transport of viruses and bacteria in aquifers are major concerns worldwide. Laboratory column tests tend to overestimate removal rates compared to field scale, leading to potential underestimation of groundwater contamination risks.
