The significant role of montmorillonite on the formation of hematite nanoparticles from ferrihydrite under heat treatment

Lixia Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that under high temperature conditions, montmorillonite has a positive impact on the transformation of ferrihydrite into hematite nanoparticles, dispersing particles and reducing their size. Strong interactions between montmorillonite and ferrihydrite can reduce aggregation, contributing to the understanding of the formation and preservation of natural nano-sized minerals in nature.

Fenton chemistry and reactive oxygen species in soil: Abiotic mechanisms of biotic processes, controls and consequences for carbon and nutrient cycling

Guang-Hui Yu et al.

Summary: Fenton reactions play a significant role in the decomposition of organic matter in soil, with the mechanisms depending on the sources and pathways of reactive oxygen species. These reactions are crucial for soil organic carbon cycling and can have a dual impact on OM mineralization and long-term carbon stabilization.

Selective retention of extracellular polymeric substances induced by adsorption to and coprecipitation with ferrihydrite

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that microbially-derived compounds, particularly extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), play a significant role in the soil organic matter pool. The interaction between EPS and soil minerals affects the sorption and selective retention of EPS constituents. The study investigates the EPS association pathways with ferrihydrite and their impact on the mobility and fate of microbially-derived organic matter in soil environments.

Effects of concentration and chemical composition of natural organic matter on the aggregative behavior of silver nanoparticles

Mathieu Millour et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in consumer products and their interactions with natural organic matter (NOM) in aquatic environments significantly affect their aggregation behavior and size distribution. NOM fractions with different chemical compositions play a crucial role in promoting or stabilizing the formation of AgNP aggregates of varying sizes. The presence of both salt and NOM compounds alters the size distribution of silver aggregates, with aromatic and aliphatic carbon content in NOM playing a key role in influencing the aggregation behavior of AgNPs.

Appraisal of geochemical composition and hydrodynamic sorting of the river suspended material: Application of time-integrated suspended sediment sampler in a medium-sized river (the Sava River catchment)

Mavro Lucic et al.

Summary: The composition of suspended particulate matter in rivers is influenced by hydrodynamic sorting and provenance, with significant variations observed based on different hydrological conditions. Using a time-integrated suspended sediment sampler (TIMS), the study found that the mineralogical and geochemical composition of the material is largely dependent on these conditions. Issues such as the inability to retain the finest particles and biologically driven carbonate precipitation should be taken into account when interpreting the collected data.

Role of NOM-hematite nanoparticle complexes and organic and inorganic cations in the coherence of silica and clay particles: evaluation based on nanoscale forces and molecular self-assembly

Zhenquan Wang et al.

Summary: The evaluation of nanoscale forces between a silica probe and hematite nanoparticle coated mica in the presence of natural organic matter and guanidinium cations revealed that the type of molecules and ions significantly affect the efficiency of cementing agents towards stable soil aggregate formation. Different natural organic matter molecules and inorganic/organic cations lead to varying electrostatic repulsions and adhesion forces between the probe and the substrate. The interactions between sesquioxide nanominerals and soil biodegradation products can potentially enhance environmental quality and counteract destabilizing forces.
