Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Pharmaceutical residues in digested sewage sludge: Occurrence, seasonal variation and risk assessment for soil

Senar Aydin et al.

Summary: The occurrences, temporal variations and ecotoxicological risks of 38 selected pharmaceuticals from 7 therapeutic classes have been observed in the anaerobically treated sludge of the urban wastewater treatment plant in Konya, Turkey. The total concentrations of all pharmaceutical compounds ranged from 280 to 4898 μg/kg of dry matter. The dominant therapeutic class was analgesics and anti-inflammatories, and the use of treated sludge as fertilizer in agricultural lands causes continuous contamination of the terrestrial environment by pharmaceuticals.

Do we need different machine learning algorithms for QSAR modeling? A comprehensive assessment of 16 machine learning algorithms on 14 QSAR data sets

Zhenxing Wu et al.

Summary: A study on learning QSAR models using various ML algorithms for 14 public datasets showed that rbf-SVM, rbf-GPR, XGBoost, and DNN generally perform better than other algorithms. SVM and XGBoost are recommended for regression learning on small datasets, while XGBoost is an excellent choice for large datasets. Ensemble models integrating multiple algorithms can improve prediction accuracy.

The potential for adverse effects in fish exposed to antidepressants in the aquatic environment

Sophie L. Gould et al.

Summary: Antidepressants, commonly prescribed for psychiatric conditions, may impact fish and other aquatic wildlife when released into the natural environment. However, research suggests that effects on fish at exposure levels occurring in nature are low, particularly for standard measured endpoints in risk assessment. Further studies are needed to assess the risks posed by antidepressants, focusing on behavior, environmentally realistic exposure levels, chronic exposure scenarios, and mixtures analyses.

Towards 'one substance - one assessment': An analysis of EU chemical registration and aquatic risk assessment frameworks

Joanke van Dijk et al.

Summary: The European Union aims to achieve a circular economy, restore biodiversity, and reduce environmental pollution through the Green Deal, including a proposed 'one-substance one-assessment' approach for chemicals. Analysis of the five main European chemical registration frameworks revealed important differences in environmental protection goals and risk assessment strategies, leading to inconsistent outcomes for similar chemicals. Industrial chemicals were found to be the least hazardous for freshwater environments, while biocides were identified as the most toxic under current regulatory schemes.

Wastewater-based epidemiology for illicit drugs: A critical review on global data

Marit Huizer et al.

Summary: Illicit drug use is a complex and stigmatized behavior, making it challenging for drug surveillance systems. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a method used to estimate drug consumption, with studies increasing globally. However, there are uncertainties in sampling methods and consumption data, and further standardization of WBE is desired. High-quality studies are increasing, but WBE has not been widely used in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Russia, with high consumption rates in the US and lower rates reported in Asia.

Summary: The CompTox Chemistry Dashboard contains one of the largest public databases on Zebrafish developmental toxicity, with data on 1018 compounds measured in low concentration ranges for 19 toxicological endpoints. Among the 209 developed QSAR models, only 8 passed the threshold for acceptable model quality based on testing sets.

Ecotoxicological effects, environmental fate and risks of pharmaceutical and personal care products in the water environment: A review

Huan Wang et al.

Summary: The widespread use of PPCPs has negative impacts on aquatic organisms and the environment, as well as potential hazards to human health. It is essential to study the acute and long-term toxicity of PPCPs, evaluate their environmental behaviors, and make a reasonable assessment of the ecotoxicology and human health risks associated with PPCPs.

New psychoactive substances in several European populations assessed by wastewater-based epidemiology

Sara Castiglioni et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a useful tool for investigating the use of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and has been verified in Europe. The study found that the use of NPS is lower than traditional drugs, and WBE can assess the spatial and temporal characteristics of NPS use.

Summary: The pollutants from legal pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs are causing adverse effects on the environment, and have become a concern due to their toxicity and lack of biodegradability. Recent studies have confirmed the presence of these residues in drinking water, surface water, and groundwater, with wastewater treatment plants considered hotspots for pharmaceutical residue removal.
