Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: The fate of antibiotics in activated sludge was studied in this research. Results show that removal mechanisms differ between sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs). Protein-like substance and P450 enzymes were found to play vital roles in the adsorption and degradation of sulfonamides, respectively. Additionally, different removal efficiencies of sulfonamides were analyzed based on steric and electronic effects, providing insights into self-protection mechanisms of activated sludge against chronic toxicities of antibiotics.

Sulfadiazine removal by peroxymonosulfate activation with sulfide-modified microscale zero-valent iron: Major radicals, the role of sulfur species, and particle size effect

Chen Ling et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that sulfide-modified zero-valent iron (S-Fe-0) can enhance the catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate activation. The sulfur species formed on the Fe-0 surface play a crucial role, with S-2(-) and SO32- accelerating the conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+. Radical quenching experiments identified center dot OH as the major contributor to sulfadiazine removal in S-Fe-0/PMS system. The study also showed that smaller Fe-0 particles (< 8 μm) were more effective in the sulfidation treatment method.

Effect of ammonia on acute toxicity and disinfection byproducts formation during chlorination of secondary wastewater effluents

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: Ammonia nitrogen concentration significantly affects the formation of disinfection byproducts and acute toxicity in chlorinated wastewater. Higher NH3-N concentration reduces the formation of most DBPs but enhances the acute toxicity of luminescent bacteria and zebrafish embryos. Wastewater with NH3-N concentration below 1.00 mg-N/L is considered to have an acceptable toxicity level. DBPs contribute significantly to luminescent bacteria toxicity at low NH3-N concentration, while monochloramine contributes more at high NH3-N concentration. Chlorine dioxide and UV disinfection can effectively reduce acute toxicity compared to chlorination.

Aminopolycarboxylic acids modified oxygen reduction by zero valent iron: Proton-coupled electron transfer, role of iron ion and reactive oxidant generation

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activated by Fe-0 in the presence of three aminopolycarboxylic acids (CAs) was investigated for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT). The presence of CAs enhanced the generation of surface-bound Fe2+ and dissolved iron ion, resulting in higher SMT removal. ORR through a two-electron transfer pathway was mainly responsible for H2O2 generation in NTA and EDTA systems, while a single-electron ORR was the major source for producing H2O2 in EDDS system. Fe-0/EDDS/O-2 produced more O-1(2) than Fe-0/EDTA/O-2 and Fe-0/NTA/O-2, but the radical contributed negligibly to SMT removal.
