Adsorption and thermal degradation of microplastics from aqueous solutions by Mg/Zn modified magnetic biochars

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces efficient Mg/Zn modified magnetic biochar adsorbents for microplastic removal, showing high removal efficiencies in removing polystyrene microspheres from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process is attributed to electrostatic and chemical bonding interactions. Real water components can influence the removal efficiency, highlighting the competitive adsorption effect. Thermal treatment facilitates microplastic degradation and adsorbent regeneration, maintaining high removal efficiency even after multiple cycles. These low-cost, eco-friendly Mg/Zn-MBCs show promising potential for microplastic removal applications.

Lead(II) adsorption on microwave-pyrolyzed biochars and hydrochars depends on feedstock type and production temperature

Christopher Nzediegwu et al.

Summary: Lead(II) adsorption using carbon-rich chars, produced at different temperatures from various feedstocks, was studied. The results showed that biochars outperformed hydrochars for lead(II) adsorption, with the highest adsorption for canola straw biochar produced at 500°C. Lead(II) adsorption in biochar was mainly attributed to precipitation as hydrocerussite and lead oxide phosphate, whereas in hydrochar it decreased due to interaction with aromatic carbon.

Improving nutrients removal and energy recovery from wastes using hydrochar

Lan Wu et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an eco-friendly, flexible, and efficient method to valorize wet solid wastes, producing carbon-rich hydrochar. Research has focused on the impacts of hydrochar on energy recovery, nutrient reclamation, and wastewater treatment, while also analyzing the influence of hydrochar type on its application. Studies have quantitatively summarized the benefits of using hydrochar in anaerobic digestion and as a slow-fertilizer for plant growth, as well as evaluating its effectiveness as an adsorbent for remediating pollutants from wastewater. Challenges and opportunities for future applications of hydrochar in waste management are also discussed.
