Effect of bioaugmentation combined with activated charcoal on the mitigation of volatile fatty acids inhibition during anaerobic digestion

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: The combination of bioaugmentation and Activated charcoal (AC) was found to improve reactor performance in anaerobic digestion by significantly increasing propionate degradation rate and accelerating biogas production. This was achieved by the immobilization of microorganisms on AC, enhancing interspecies electron transfer and promoting syntrophic microbial guilds enrichment.

Revealing the link between evolution of electron transfer capacity of humic acid and key enzyme activities during anaerobic digestion

Xiqing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HAs increased during anaerobic digestion process at both mesophilic (671-1479 mu mol gHA-1) and thermophilic (774-1506 mu mol gHA-1) conditions. The ETC was positively correlated with bacterial community in hydrolytic and acidogenic phases, but negatively correlated with archaeal community in methanogenic phase. Furthermore, HAs formed under thermophilic conditions had a greater influence on key enzyme activities than those formed under mesophilic conditions.

Assessment and projection of environmental impacts of food waste treatment in China from life cycle perspectives

Min Liu et al.

Summary: This study compared different treatment options for food waste in China using life cycle assessment and found that increasing anaerobic digestion treatment and stopping landfilling could reduce most environmental impacts by over 50%. Although anaerobic digestion is more environmentally friendly, it consumes more freshwater, so it is important to promote waste classification policies upstream and enhance resource utilization downstream.

Comprehensively understanding metabolic pathways of protein during the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Siyuan Wang et al.

Summary: The metabolic pathways of protein during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge were comprehensively investigated. The results showed the involvement of 100 types of peptidases in the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes. Serine endopeptidases and serine-type carboxypeptidases were identified as key enzymes. The study also identified critical metabolic pathways for amino acids, which could contribute to improving the performance of anaerobic digestion.

Insights of enhancing methane production under high-solid anaerobic digestion of wheat straw by calcium peroxide pretreatment and zero valent iron addition

Wenjing Tian et al.

Summary: The combination of CaO2 pretreatment and ZVI addition effectively enhances the anaerobic digestion of wheat straw by promoting hydrolysis and acidification processes, leading to increased biogas production. ZVI improves enzyme activity and provides electrons for the conversion of CaO2 to methane, resulting in higher methane content in the digesters.

Effects of micro-aeration on microbial niches and antimicrobial resistances in blackwater anaerobic digesters

Bing Guo et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of different micro-aeration dosages on anaerobic digestion of blackwater. Results showed that low oxygen dosages led to higher methane production efficiency, while high oxygen dosages resulted in more volatile fatty acids accumulation. Microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance genes were also affected by the oxygen dosages, indicating the potential for controlling ARG profiles through micro-aeration in AD processes.

Novel strategy for enhancing acetic and formic acids generation in acidogenesis of anaerobic digestion via targeted adjusting environmental niches

Ruming Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the optimization of acetic acid and formic acid production efficient methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion. It was found that adjusting the operation parameters, specifically pH and ORP, influenced the production of acetic and formic acids. Microbiological analysis revealed that fermenting at pH 7.0 enriched the diversity of microorganisms, leading to increased production of acetic and formic acids.

Accelerating anaerobic digestion for methane production: Potential role of direct interspecies electron transfer

Zixin Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a commercial technology used for producing bioenergy from waste, but suffers from inefficiencies. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) is seen as a potential solution to enhance the process, as it allows for faster and more stable transport of reducing equivalents between bacteria and archaea. This review paper discusses different mechanisms of DIET, its role during organic degradation, startup performance, methane production, and potential industrial applications.
