Lack of methane hotspot in the upstream dam: Case study in a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Xiaoxia Bai et al.

Summary: This study reveals that damming of rivers alters the spatial distribution of carbon in sediments, leading to higher CH4 and CO2 concentrations upstream compared to downstream. During reservoir impounding periods, CH4 diffusive flux is higher upstream than downstream, while CH4 emissions are predominantly by ebullition, with significantly higher flux downstream during discharging periods. The increase in TOC in downstream sediment is attributed to riparian zone soil erosion caused by water level fluctuations.

Intense methane ebullition from urban inland waters and its significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions

Gongqin Wang et al.

Summary: The study measured the concentrations and fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in rivers and lakes in the megacity of Beijing, China, finding high CH4 emissions from urban inland waters, with ebullition playing a significant role. The CH4 emissions accounted for 20% of CO2 emissions in terms of the carbon release and were 1.7 times higher in terms of CO2 equivalent emissions from Beijing inland waters, indicating a positive feedback between greenhouse gas emissions and climate warming.

Half of global methane emissions come from highly variable aquatic ecosystem sources

Judith A. Rosentreter et al.

Summary: The study shows that aquatic ecosystems play a significant role in global methane emissions, with emissions varying greatly within and between different types of aquatic systems. Methane emissions increase from natural to impacted aquatic ecosystems and from coastal to freshwater ecosystems.

The impacts of reservoirs on the sources and transport of riverine organic carbon in the karst area: A multi-tracer study

Yuanbi Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of reservoirs on organic carbon cycling in karst rivers using multiple tracer methods. Results showed that phytoplankton-derived OC gradually increased in dissolved organic carbon in the reservoir area, while terrestrial OC in particulate organic carbon was largely replaced. Higher primary production was observed in the transition area compared to the reservoir area, possibly due to nutrient release from suspended particles.

Multiple controls on carbon dynamics in mixed karst and non-karst mountainous rivers, Southwest China, revealed by carbon isotopes (δ13C and Δ14C)

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: Riverine transport of carbon from the land to the oceans is significant in the global carbon cycle. The study in southwest China shows that carbon dynamics in subtropical rivers are highly affected by aquatic photosynthesis, which has significant implications on carbon cycling within river systems.
