Recovery, regeneration and sustainable management of spent adsorbents from wastewater treatment streams: A review

Arun Baskar et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the recovery and management of spent adsorbents in the adsorption process for wastewater treatment. It evaluates the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and discusses various techniques for the recovery and regeneration of spent adsorbents. The sustainable management of spent adsorbents in the context of resource recovery and circular economy is examined.

Enhanced phosphate removal and potential recovery from wastewater by thermo-chemically calcinated shell adsorbents

Sabolc Pap et al.

Summary: Shell-based adsorbents prepared from mussel and oyster shells through chemical calcination were effective in removing phosphate from water. The adsorbents contained calcite and lime on their surfaces and achieved high phosphate adsorption capacity through inner-sphere complexation and surface microprecipitation mechanisms. Desorption study revealed that the bonded phosphate could be readily available for plant uptake in soil.

Long-term phosphorus sorption and leaching in sand filters for onsite treatment systems

Rajabu Hamisi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching of phosphorus in sand soil when exposed to different wastewater characteristics and hydraulic loading modes. The results showed that sand soils have different capacities for adsorption and desorption of various substances depending on the influent wastewater, loading rate, and operation time. The sand columns showed high risks of phosphorus leaching when loaded with actual wastewater from septic tanks and biofiltration tanks. The modeling results suggested that reducing the loading rate could increase phosphorus removal efficiency and prolong the operational lifetime.

Adsorption and mass transfer studies of methylene blue onto comminuted seedpods from Luehea divaricata and Inga laurina

Jordana Georgin et al.

Summary: Comminuted seedpods of LDPR and ILPR were used as alternative adsorbents for MB removal, with PFO and HSDM-Crank as the most suitable kinetic models and the Langmuir model as the best fit for equilibrium curves. The thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous adsorption dominated by physisorption, with external mass transfer as the limiting step and surface diffusion increasing with adsorption capacity. The materials showed efficiency in treating simulated effluent with superior color removal values exceeding 70%.

Lime Amendments to Enhance Soil Phosphorus Adsorption Capacity and to Reduce Phosphate Desorption

Faezeh Eslamian et al.

Summary: The research evaluated the potential of hydrated lime and lime kiln dust as soil amendments to increase soil P adsorption capacity and reduce dissolved P desorption, finding that both significantly improved the adsorption coefficient in different soil types. Further studies are needed to examine their performance in interactions with crop growth at field scale.

Adsorption of Phosphate Ions on Chicken Feather Hydrochar and Hydrochar-Soil Mixtures

Jesmin Akter et al.

Summary: The study found that chicken feather hydrochar has good adsorption capacity for phosphate ions, and temperature significantly enhances its adsorption performance. The Langmuir isotherm model is more suitable for describing the adsorption data, indicating that chicken feather hydrochar has the potential as a cost-effective material for phosphate adsorption.

Dynamic adsorption models and artificial neural network prediction of mercury adsorption by a dendrimer-grafted polyacrylonitrile fiber in fixed-bed column

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a dendrimer-grafted polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF-TU) was successfully synthesized and characterized for mercury removal. The adsorption feasibility was thoroughly studied through batch and dynamic tests, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 227 mg g-1. The study revealed that PANF-TU exhibited promising adsorption performance and could be a potential material for the remediation of Hg2+ polluted aqueous systems.
