Evolution of pneumococcal serotype epidemiology in Botswana following introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine

Sweta M. Patel et al.

Summary: The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines has reduced invasive pneumococcal disease burden, but the effectiveness of these vaccines can be reduced by an increase in non-vaccine serotype diseases.

Immunoglobulin G passive transfer from mothers to infants: total IgG, IgG subclasses and specific antipneumococcal IgG in 6-week Malawian infants exposed or unexposed to HIV

Silvia Baroncelli et al.

Summary: Compared to HIV-unexposed, uninfected (HUU) infants, HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants have abnormalities in total IgG and IgG2 levels, suggesting that maternal HIV infection can impair the transplacental passage of IgG despite antiretroviral therapy. HEU infants also have significantly lower levels of specific anti-pneumococcal IgG, potentially increasing their vulnerability to pneumococcal infections.
