Selective excitation of high-order shear horizontal wave (SH1) by using a piezoelectric interdigital transducer

Hao Qiu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a piezoelectric interdigital transducer named SH-IDT for selectively exciting SH waves, deriving an explicit formula for far-field wave displacement and validating it through finite element simulations. Two SH1-IDTs at different frequencies were designed and fabricated for wave mode selection and energy concentration, with experimental results in good agreement with simulation results, validating the design of the SH1-IDT.

High-resolution thickness maps of corrosion using SH1 guided wave tomography

Andreas A. E. Zimmermann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of the first-order shear-horizontal guided wave mode, SH1, to improve resolution limits in guided wave tomography. The results show a significant improvement in resolution, enabling reliable detection and sizing of defects up to 3T-by-3T, a long-pursued goal in guided wave tomography.

Shear horizontal wave transducers for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing: A review

Hongchen Miao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the latest research on SH wave transducers, covering the working principles, advantages and limitations of different types of transducers, as well as the configurations for exciting and receiving SH waves in plates and pipes. These studies are expected to greatly promote the applications of SH waves in SHM, NDT, and related areas such as elastic metamaterials.

An omnidirectional shear horizontal wave transducer based on thickness-mode (d33) piezoelectric wafer active sensors

Yiran Tian et al.

Summary: An omnidirectional shear horizontal wave acoustic transducer (OSH-WAT) composed of a circular aluminum structure driven by PWAS is proposed in this study. The multiphysics finite element model is used to investigate its potential in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) applications. The research concludes with summary, concluding remarks, and suggestions for future work.
