Recent Advances in a Polydopamine-Mediated Antimicrobial Adhesion System

Indu Singh et al.

Summary: The development of drug resistance by bacteria during antibiotic treatment is a growing concern for researchers and scientists globally, prompting the need for innovative antimicrobial materials and coatings. Nanotextured surfaces with bactericidal properties, inspired by natural antibacterial materials, have been developed to combat water-borne infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms. Protein-based adhesives from marine mussels containing catecholic amino acids have inspired the development of novel coatings like polydopamine, known for its ability to adhere to various surfaces.

Antimicrobial Peptides Grafted onto a Plasma Polymer Interlayer Platform: Performance upon Extended Bacterial Challenge

Stefani S. Griesser et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of antimicrobial coatings comprising AMPs LL37, Magainin 2, and Parasin 1 grafted onto a plasma polymer platform. The coatings showed significant reductions in bacterial colonization and were found to be non-toxic to primary fibroblasts. Further research is needed to explore potential consequences arising from the presence of dead bacteria and compare them to non-fouling coatings.

Covalent grafting of hyperbranched poly-L-lysine on Ti-based implants achieves dual functions of antibacteria and promoted osteointegration in vivo

Zhijian Yang et al.

Summary: The covalent immobilization of hyperbranched poly-L-lysine (HBPL) polymers onto titanium substrates and implants displayed excellent antibacterial activity and promotion of cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. Additionally, the HBPL-modified screws showed good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory abilities at an early stage of implantation and better osteointegration compared with control titanium screws in an in vivo S. aureus infection rat model.

Lubricin-Inspired Loop Zwitterionic Peptide for Fabrication of Superior Antifouling Surfaces

Chuanxi Li et al.

Summary: Zwitterionic peptides with loop-like structures exhibit better antifouling properties by resisting protein and bacteria adsorption, being more rigid compared to linear-like peptides, reducing interaction with foulants, improving hydrophilicity, and avoiding chain aggregation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the conformation effect of zwitterionic peptides, which may contribute to the design of novel antifouling materials in various biomedical applications.
