Advanced numerical modelling of light-gauge steel framed walls subject to eccentric compression

Mithum Peiris et al.

Summary: The current studies on light-gauge steel framed (LSF) wall and floor systems are limited to individual members with idealized boundary conditions. Previous idealized single stud models are unable to capture the complex behavior associated with stud-to-sheathing and stud-to-track connections. Advanced numerical models that explicitly model all LSF wall components have been developed, but they are limited to LSF walls under axial compression. This study investigates the behavior of LSF walls made of lipped channel studs under eccentric axial compression and proposes recommendations for finite element modeling of LSF walls under combined loading actions based on the findings.

Local in-plane strength and stiffness of stud-to-sheathing fastener connections in LSF wall panels

Tharindu Abeysiriwardena et al.

Summary: Experimental study was conducted to investigate the non-linear local in-plane strength and stiffness of screw-fastened stud-to-gypsum plasterboard sheathing connections by varying a range of parameters affecting their stiffness and capacities. The resulting load-displacement curves were analysed, and models of characteristic curves were developed. Finite element model and analytical model were then developed to determine the local in-plane response and initial stiffness of stud-to-sheathing screw fastener connections, and were validated using experimental results.

Behaviour of stud-to-sheathing fastener connections in LSF walls at elevated temperatures

Tharindu Abeysiriwardena et al.

Summary: The study focused on the local shear and pull-through responses of connections between steel studs and gypsum plasterboard sheathing in LSF walls under fire conditions. The results can be used to optimize the design and improve the fire resistance of load-bearing LSF walls.

Behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel sections subject to eccentric axial compression

Mithum Peiris et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the issues of cold-formed steel components in light-gauge steel framed wall systems when subjected to axial pressure and bending actions, proposing an improved design method. The research findings indicate that the current design guidelines underestimate the load bearing capacities, recommending the use of the improved design method.

Summary: This experimental study investigated the performance of sheathed cold-formed steel C-lipped wall studs with service holes under compression and bending forces. The results showed that the spacing of connectors significantly influenced the load-bearing capacity of the studs.
