An integrated metabolomics and proteogenomics approach reveals molecular alterations following carbamazepine exposure in the male mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis

Thibaut Dumas et al.

Summary: The study revealed the potential molecular mechanisms of carbamazepine toxicity on mussels, including metabolic rewiring, cellular stress, autophagy induction, programmed cell death, and modulation of apoptotic cognate proteins. Integrative metabolomics and proteogenomics approaches were highly relevant in identifying these regulatory processes.

Summary: A workflow combining different experimental techniques and advanced chemometric methods was proposed to study the photodegradation process of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The process was monitored using various analytical methods, and the data was treated with Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) analysis. Six species, including photoproducts and conformational isomers, were identified during the degradation process.

Advanced analytical, chemometric, and genomic tools to identify polymer degradation products and potential microbial consumers in wastewater environments

M. Vila-Costa et al.

Summary: The worldwide growth in plastic production and insufficient waste management have resulted in significant environmental pollution. This study proposes a workflow utilizing advanced data analysis and processing tools to characterize the degradation of polymers in water, as well as the composition of microbial communities involved in their degradation. The results show that hydrolysis of ester groups and formation of cyclic polycaprolactone oligomers are the dominant degradation processes, and the composition of microbial communities varies among different wastewater treatment plants and stages. The microbial communities attached to the polymer may serve as potential consumers.

Andrea Cerrato et al.

Summary: The study focused on analyzing polar and positively charged metabolites in urine samples from benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatic cancer patients, utilizing an analytical platform with up to 40-fold analyte enrichment. By applying the ROIMCR procedure to complex metabolomics datasets generated by UHPLC-HRMS, differential metabolites were successfully resolved and tentatively identified, underscoring the importance of this approach in cancer biomarker research. The study highlights the significance of previously neglected metabolite classes in cancer biomarker discovery and the value of the proposed methodology.
