Summary: Air pollution caused by particulate matter is a major threat to human health, especially in large cities. The size, composition, and toxicity of these particles vary. Ultrafine particles have a greater impact on human health as they can enter the lungs and vital organs, leading to diseases. In addition, particulate matter pollution is associated with respiratory conditions, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity.

Summary: This study presents a method of combining sp-ICP-MS and SMPS for accurate mass measurements and material-specific analysis of aerosol nanoparticles. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated through testing and researching gold nanoparticles, and measurement results of the structure of gold nanoparticle agglomerates and the primary particle diameter are provided.

Critical review on the development of analytical techniques for the elemental analysis of airborne particulate matter

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is the major threat to our health among all environmental pollutants, and its regular monitoring is required. To determine the concentrations of toxic metals and other elements in PM, microwave digestion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MW/ICPMS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques are commonly used. This review paper critically assesses these two techniques as well as three others for element determination in PM deposited on filter media, and identifies XRF and LA-ICPMS as two promising surface techniques for the analysis of PM deposits.

Measuring electrostatic charge on pneumatically generated spray drops

Summary: A new spray drop charge measurement system was developed to measure a broad range of sizes and electrostatic charges for spray drops. The study found that larger size drops had significantly higher charge levels, and increasing surfactant concentration did not increase the magnitude of drop charge among the tested surfactants. Further design improvements and computing power could enhance measurement accuracy and precision of the system.
