Adaptive co-management of environmental risks in result-based agreements for the provision of environmental services: A case study of the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program

Raphael Anammasiya Ayambire et al.

Summary: The study focuses on environmental risks in Results-based Agreements for endangered species conservation on agricultural lands, where drought is identified as a critical factor influencing land managers' decision to participate in such agreements. Environmental risks not only limit the ability of land managers to achieve ecosystem targets but also result in additional costs. The case study highlights the participatory and result-enhancing approach of SODCAP Inc. in managing environmental risks, contributing to the scholarship on environmental risk management in Results-based Agreements.

Key information needs to move from knowledge to action for biodiversity conservation in Canada

Rachel T. Buxton et al.

Summary: To address the global biodiversity crisis, robust information is essential but mechanisms to translate information into action are urgently needed. Collaboration among experts in Indigenous knowledge systems and various scientific disciplines is crucial in supporting transformative change for biodiversity conservation.

Bridging the research-implementation gap in avian conservation with translational ecology

Sarah P. Saunders et al.

Summary: The recognized gap between research and implementation in avian conservation can be overcome with translational ecology, which involves collaborative efforts from science producers and users to co-develop ecological research addressing conservation issues. Following translational ecology principles can lead to improved conservation decision-making and delivery of outcomes accessible to broader audiences. Embracing translational ecology can help close the research-implementation gap and ensure scientifically informed management decisions in the face of environmental threats to avian communities worldwide.

The role of trust in citizen acceptance of climate policy: Comparing perceptions of government competence, integrity and value similarity

Shelby Kitt et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of Canadian citizens support purchase incentives and most regulations, but have lower support for a carbon tax. The survey indicated that fewer than 50% of respondents trust their national or provincial government regarding climate change issues in terms of competence, integrity, or value similarity. The only trust variable consistently positively associated with support for all five policies tested is the perception of national government competence.

Rangeland Land-Sharing, Livestock Grazing's Role in the Conservation of Imperiled Species

Sheila Barry et al.

Summary: The relationship between grazing and species conservation in California is complex and varied. Some species are threatened by livestock grazing, some are positively influenced, and grazing is beneficial for managing vegetation and providing habitat structure and ecosystem functions. Managed grazing can combat anthropogenic threats and support conservation-reliant species.

Species at risk habitat conservation on private land: the perspective of cattle ranchers

Dana Reiter et al.

Summary: Cattle ranchers face the challenge of meeting the needs of a growing population in an environmentally sustainable manner while also contributing to biodiversity conservation on rangelands. Incentive programs have been developed to encourage voluntary stewardship of endangered species on privately owned and managed lands, but there is a lack of evidence on their efficacy from the perspective of ranchers. Interviews with ranchers participating in a national program in southwest Saskatchewan, Canada, showed high satisfaction and perceived benefits from their involvement in the program, as they actively conserved habitat for species at risk and were rewarded for their stewardship.

Understanding landowner decisions regarding access to private land for conservation research

Rebecca S. M. O'Brien et al.

Summary: Private land accounts for over half of the land mass of the United States and is crucial for conservation efforts, yet remains understudied by conservation biologists. A study found that landowners are more likely to allow research on their property if they are interested in the research, have previously allowed research, have positive attitudes towards conservation, and have larger properties. Additionally, many landowners allowed research out of a desire to be helpful.

Incentivizing stewardship in a biodiversity hot spot: land managers in the grasslands

Raphael Anammasiya Ayambire et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on proposing appropriate mechanisms to incentivize stewardship on agricultural Crown lands in Saskatchewan, which is one of the biodiversity hot spots in Canada. Collaboration between government entities, NGOs, and land managers is crucial for enhanced decision-making, institutional change, and conservation efforts.
