Preparation of gahnite (ZnAl2O4) superhydrophobic coating on aluminum alloy with self-healing and high stability properties

Guang Zhu et al.

Summary: Gahnite (ZnAl2O4) is rarely used as superhydrophobic material, but in this study, a gahnite superhydrophobic coating was successfully fabricated by thermal decomposition of Zn-Al LDH coating on aluminum alloy. The microstructure with excellent superhydrophobic properties was achieved by controlling the calcination temperature and time. Additionally, the modified coating showed improved stability and self-healing capabilities in different environments.

Superhydrophobic and Photothermal PVDF/CNTs Durable Composite Coatings for Passive Anti-Icing/Active De-Icing

Guo Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchical coating structure combining PVDF and CNTs was developed to achieve excellent anti-icing properties. The coating showed low ice adhesion and long icing delay time due to the multilayered structure provided by PVDF particles and CNTs. Additionally, the efficient photothermal conversion of CNTs enabled the coating to achieve photothermal de-icing performance, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in the outside environment.

The mechanisms of anti-icing properties degradation for slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces under shear stresses

Ludmila B. Boinovich et al.

Summary: The loss of anti-icing properties on SLIPS surfaces under repetitive shear stresses is an intrinsic process related to their structure. Experiments showed that compared to SHS, SLIPS experienced dramatic degradation after repetitive icing-deicing cycles, with lower capillary pressure and the Rehbinder effect contributing to the accelerated destruction of the mechanical texture.

Lidija Svecnjak et al.

Summary: Beeswax adulteration is a global issue in the apiculture sector, lacking clearly defined purity criteria and official quality controls. Traditional physico-chemical analysis methods show inconsistencies in detecting adulterants. This study analyzed a wide range of analytical methods and purity criteria for detecting common beeswax adulterants, suggesting a combination of traditional methods with advanced analytical tools for reliable detection.

Summary: In this study, a diffuse interface phase-field method was extended for two-phase flow simulations, including interfacial heat transfer and the thermal Marangoni effect. The governing equations, stemmed from variational consideration of total free energy, consist of coupled Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes equations with a temperature dependent mixing energy term. The developed code in the OpenFOAM framework was validated for various test cases, showing good agreement with experimental results.

Summary: This study analyzed the forces and critical conditions on static sessile droplets deposited on hydrophobic micropillar-structured surfaces, proposing a new force-balance model which showed better agreement with experimental results compared to classical models. Integration of depinning mechanisms into the model allows for reliable estimations of critical conditions for the C-W transition during evaporation, providing appropriate geometric parameters for achieving high hydrophobic stability.

Improving the ice-melting capacity of traditional deicers

Hizb Ullah Sajid et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the ice-melting capacity of traditional rock-salt deicer at very low temperatures by using bio-based non-toxic corn-derived polyols, evaluate the skid resistance of pavements, and determine the viscosity of the polyol-modified deicing solutions. The results showed that increasing the concentration of corn-derived polyols enhanced the ice melting capacity of the deicing solutions but reduced skid resistance.
