A two-stage framework for automated operational modal identification

Jice Zeng et al.

Summary: This research proposes an automated modal identification approach, consisting of modal analysis and automated interpretation of the stabilization diagram, to reduce the influence of uncertainty and spurious modes. The proposed approach is verified in two field tests and is suitable for automated OMA and long-term health monitoring.

A machine learning approach for automatic operational modal analysis

Vezio Mugnaini et al.

Summary: One major application of Structural Dynamics is the dynamic characterization of man-made structures and components. Traditional Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) is not always convenient, and thus output-only Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is considered a practical alternative. This study presents an Automatic OMA method based on statistical principles and a Machine Learning clustering approach. The algorithm is tested on a numerical case study and experimental analysis of an Airbus H135 helicopter blade to verify its performance.

Experimental modal analysis of structural systems by using the fast relaxed vector fitting method

Marco Civera et al.

Summary: System identification techniques are used to identify dynamic parameters of mechanical systems and civil infrastructure, aiding in structural health monitoring. Despite the accuracy and robustness of input-output SI techniques, the popular RFP method has drawbacks such as nonlinearity and non-convexity. The Fast Relaxed Vector Fitting approach is proposed as a novel technique for structural SI, showing promising results in accuracy and computational performance.

A multi-objective genetic algorithm strategy for robust optimal sensor placement

Marco Civera et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new approach based on multi-objective optimization and genetic algorithms for a sensor configuration strategy driven by damage scenarios. The aim is to enhance the robustness of sensor placement for damage detection after potential catastrophic events. The strategy is tested on the bell tower of the Santa Maria and San Giovenale Cathedral in Fossano, Italy, and compared to other classic strategies and a standard GA approach with a single objective function.

System identification via Fast Relaxed Vector Fitting for the Structural Health Monitoring of masonry bridges

Marco Civera et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for the maintenance of architectural heritage has led to the extensive use of System Identification techniques for Structural Health Monitoring purposes. Historical masonry structures present challenges due to their non-linear mechanical properties and centuries-old buildings are severely affected by deterioration and weather conditions. The Fast Relaxed Vector Fitting approach shows promise as a rapid and reliable tool for vibration-based System Identification of such structures.
