Risk assessment of trace elements accumulation in soil-herbage systems at varied elevation in subalpine grassland of northern Tibet Plateau

Qianfang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ecological environment of remote grasslands affected by human activities in the Tibetan Plateau. Results showed higher concentrations of heavy metals in soil compared to background values, but heavy metal concentrations in herbage met safety standards. Speciation analysis indicated low exchangeable content of heavy metals in soils, except for Pb, Cd, and Mn. Overall, there was no obvious ecological risk in the subalpine grassland area.

Chemical and statistical characterization of beach sand sediments: implication for natural and anthropogenic origin and paleo-environment

Mustafa Gurhan Yalcin et al.

Summary: This study examined the chemical properties, statistical variation in elements, and classification of beach sand, revealing that CaO, SiO2, and MgO were the most abundant major elements. The beach sand is a mixture of marine carbonaceous to carbonaceous ferrites with magnesium association, influenced by the Tekirova ophiolite in the region.

Nickel uptake kinetics and its structural and physiological impacts in the seagrass Halophila stipulacea

Paraskevi Malea et al.

Summary: This study investigated nickel uptake and effects in seagrasses. Results showed that nickel may pose a threat to seagrass meadows, H. stipulacea can be regarded as an efficient biomonitor of nickel, and AF and ER impairment in seagrass leaves can be considered as early biomarkers of nickel-induced stress. The data obtained can be useful in the management and conservation of coastal environments.

Human Health Risk Assessment for Exposure to Potentially Toxic Elements in Polluted Rivers in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities in the Ecuadorian Amazon have increased the release of potentially toxic elements into rivers, posing health risks to residents. This study conducted a human health risk assessment using deterministic and probabilistic methods, finding adverse effects and proposing public strategies to reduce pollution and exposure risks. The findings highlight the importance of addressing the concentration of PTEs and exposure duration for health risk assessment in polluted rivers.

Ecological and probabilistic human health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in river sediments affected by mining activities in Ecuador

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: This study assessed the ecological and human health risk caused by heavy metal(loid)s exposure in river sediments in a key mining site in Ecuador, revealing severe ecological risks at most sampling stations and unacceptable carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for residents exposed to polluted sediments. These results can serve as a baseline for developing public health strategies to monitor and reduce health hazards in mining communities.

Chromium behavior in a highly urbanized coastal area (Bahia Blanca Estuary, Argentina)

A. D. Forero Lopez et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the levels of Cr, Fe, and Mn in suspended particulate matter in Bahia Blanca Estuary, finding that Cr may come from various anthropogenic sources and be influenced by phytoplankton. Additionally, negative correlations between Cr and DO and between Cr and pH suggest an increasing trend in the dissolved form of Cr.

Tracking mineral and geochemical characteristics of Holocene lake sediments: the case of Hotagen, west-central Sweden

Hussein Jaafar Kanbar et al.

Summary: The study characterized a Holocene lake sediment core from Hotagen, west-central Sweden, revealing changes in mineral and geochemical properties throughout the Holocene period, reflecting the transformation of terrestrial ecosystems from glacier-covered land to vegetated areas. The sediment core settled over a period of approximately 7500 years and showed consistent mineral, geochemical, and organic composition, with distinct variations in < 4 mu m size-fractionated sediments containing higher amounts of X-ray amorphous materials and clay minerals with variable Na, Mg, and K contents.
