River flow rate prediction in the Des Moines watershed (Iowa, USA): a machine learning approach

Ahmed Elbeltagi et al.

Summary: Predicting the flow rate in rivers is crucial for water resource planning and management. This study demonstrates that accurate streamflow prediction models can be developed using a Machine Learning approach. The Des Moines watershed, including both the Des Moines River and Raccoon River, was selected for a case study. Four machine learning algorithms were used, and the M5P algorithm produced the best predictions with R-2 values of 0.970 and 0.960 for two stations on the East Fork Des Moines River at Dakota City and Des Moines River near Tracy, respectively. Accurate predictions were also achieved for the Raccoon River, with R-2 values of 0.938 and 0.887 for two stations, North Raccoon River near Jefferson and Raccoon River at Van Meter, respectively.

Cost-effective management measures for coastal aquifers affected by saltwater intrusion and climate change

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Sustainable management of natural water resources and food security is crucial for the livelihood of coastal communities in the face of changing climate conditions. This study introduces a new approach for mitigating saltwater intrusion through placing artificial aquifer materials along the shoreline, which can increase infiltration area, collect runoff, and reduce water treatment costs. The modeling results show that the proposed method can effectively decrease saltwater intrusion and increase fresh groundwater availability.

Forecasting Different Types of Droughts Simultaneously Using Multivariate Standardized Precipitation Index (MSPI), MLP Neural Network, and Imperialistic Competitive Algorithm (ICA)

Pouya Aghelpour et al.

Summary: Precipitation deficit leads to meteorological drought, which can develop into various other types of droughts. Using the Multivariate Standardized Precipitation Index (MSPI) allows for simultaneous evaluation of different types of drought. The study compared the performance of the MLP model and its hybrid form with the Imperialistic Competitive Algorithm (MLP-ICA) in forecasting multivariate droughts, showing promising results for future applications in similar areas.

Spatial and temporal variability analysis of green and blue evapotranspiration of wheat in the Egyptian Nile Delta from 1997 to 2017

Ahmed Elbeltagi et al.

Summary: This study assessed green and blue water evapotranspiration in the Egyptian Nile Delta over a 20-year period, identifying optimal regions for water savings and total water saved. The integration of geographic information and changes in land use/cover proved to be effective for water management and sustainable agriculture system development under limited water resources. Irrigation supply and precipitation were found to be good indicators for predicting evapotranspiration.
