Manure management and soil biodiversity: Towards more sustainable food systems in the EU

Julia Koninger et al.

Summary: Animal farming generates over 1.4 billion tonnes of manure annually in the EU-27 and UK, with more than 90% used as organic fertilizer. Manure can enhance plant growth and soil diversity, but also poses risks of pollution and nutrient loss. Soil organisms are essential in manure transformation and degradation of toxic elements, yet soil biodiversity is often neglected in manure management practices.

Greenhouse gas emissions from an irrigated cropping rotation with dairy manure utilization in a semiarid climate

Robert S. Dungan et al.

Summary: This long-term study investigated the effects of synthetic N fertilizer, composted dairy manure, and dairy manure on greenhouse gas emissions from irrigated cropping systems in semiarid southern Idaho. The results showed that despite causing increased soil N2O emissions, dairy manure and compost applications could potentially help reduce the global warming potential by increasing soil organic carbon content.

Cycling Phosphorus and Nitrogen through Cropping Systems in an Intensive Dairy Production Region

April B. Leytem et al.

Summary: Efficient recycling of manure nutrients through local cropping systems is crucial for reducing the environmental impact of the dairy industry. However, manure alone cannot meet crop nitrogen needs, necessitating the use of synthetic fertilizer. Transportation of manure at least 12.9 km and replacing synthetic fertilizer phosphorus on 96% of cropland is necessary to balance phosphorus with crop production.

Effects of Organic Fertilizers on the Soil Microorganisms Responsible for N2O Emissions: A Review

Cristina Lazcano et al.

Summary: The use of organic fertilizers impacts the structure and function of nitrogen cycling microbial communities, with unprocessed manure potentially increasing abundance and activity of nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms. Processed manure, such as compost, vermicompost and biochar, can also stimulate these microorganisms but with comparatively lower N2O emissions than raw manure. Through a best management practices framework, negative environmental impacts of organic fertilizers can be minimized while improving soil health and sustaining food production systems.

Effects of residue stoichiometric, biochemical and C functional features on soil aggregation during decomposition of eleven organic residues

M. Halder et al.

Summary: The study found that the dilution rate of organic matter has no impact on soil respiration and aggregate stability except for nitrogen content. Residue decomposition was positively affected by soluble sugars but negatively impacted by lignin and cellulose. Organic residue input increased the GRSP level, with the order being manure > straw > vetch.
