Emergence of the London Millennium Bridge instability without synchronisation

Igor Belykh et al.

Summary: The pedestrian-induced oscillation of the London Millennium Bridge is often cited as an example of emerging synchronisation, but a study shows that the coherence of pedestrian foot placement is not the cause, but a consequence of instability. Uncorrelated pedestrians can produce positive feedback through negative damping, leading to significant lateral bridge vibration across various natural frequencies. The average negative damping is identified as the trigger for instability, offering an alternative explanation to Kuramoto theory for coherent oscillations in nature.
