Effects of Sterilization Methods on the Integrity and Functionality of Covalent Mucin Coatings on Medical Devices

Carolin A. Rickert et al.

Summary: Recent advances in biomedical materials have shown that covalent mucin coatings on polymeric materials can greatly enhance the surface properties of medical devices. Sterilization of the coated devices is essential for medical applications, but common methods may compromise the structural integrity of the coatings. Covalent mucin coatings on medical devices show potential to withstand sterilization treatments, with ethylene oxide fumigation being the most promising method. The findings suggest that the beneficial properties of mucin coatings demonstrated in vitro can be transferred to in vivo applications.

Bioinspired Dopamine/Mucin Coatings Provide Lubricity, Wear Protection, and Cell-Repellent Properties for Medical Applications

Jian Song et al.

Summary: Despite advancements in medical devices, challenges remain in terms of their anti-biofouling properties and tribological performance, leading to short- and long-term failures. Coating devices with a biocompatible layer that reduces friction, wear, and biofouling simultaneously shows promise in addressing these issues. The study demonstrates that dopamine/mucin double-layer coatings effectively decrease friction, reduce wear damage, and provide anti-biofouling properties, making them potential candidates for improving the surface properties of medical devices.

Structural Alterations of Mucins Are Associated with Losses in Functionality

Matthias Marczynski et al.

Summary: This study compares commercial and lab-purified mucin glycoproteins to decipher key molecular motifs crucial for mucin functionality, such as hydrophobic termini and hydrophilic glycosylation patterns. The research reveals how alterations in structural motifs affect mucin properties at both microscopic and macroscopic levels, providing insights into the establishment of distinct functionalities of gastric mucins.

Pepsin activity as a function of pH and digestion time on caseins and egg white proteins under static in vitro conditions

Summary: The study found that the activity of pepsin should not always be neglected under weakly acidic conditions (pH >= 4), especially for milk caseins. Additionally, the reaction kinetics of pepsin during static in vitro gastric digestion seems to evolve proportionally to the power of digestion time.
