Strengthening arsenite oxidation in water using metal-free ultrasonic activation of sulfite

Tao Luo et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel sulfite activation process using low frequency ultrasound for enhancing arsenite oxidation, demonstrating a 2.9-fold increase in oxidation rate compared to traditional ultrasound processes. The mechanisms were probed through radical-scavenging experiments and ESR spectrometry, revealing direct ultrasonolysis of sulfite as the predominant pathway. The process also showed promising results in treating natural water, indicating its potential for commercial scale applications.

Photooxidation mechanism of As(III) by straw-derived dissolved organic matter

Shaochong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photooxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution by straw-derived dissolved organic matter (S-DOM). The results showed that DOM derived from wheat straw and rape straw could efficiently oxidize As(III) under irradiation, with hydroxyl radical as the dominant oxidant. The oxidation efficiency of As(III) was inhibited in the presence of NO3- while enhanced in the presence of Fe(III).

Summary: The study demonstrated that Fe(II)/PMS coupled with NF outperformed single treatments in removing organic compounds and sulfate anions. HPSEC analysis revealed the breakdown of macromolecular organic matter into smaller fragments by Fe(II)/PMS oxidation. Zeta potential analysis showed the negatively charged small organic molecules generated during oxidation.

Mechanism of significant enhancement of VO2-Fenton-like reactions by oxalic acid for diethyl phthalate degradation

Min Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of oxalic acid can significantly enhance the degradation efficiency of DEP in VO2-Fenton-like reactions, promoting the formation of reactive species such as center ·OH and thus facilitating pollutant degradation. Addition of reducing agents plays a crucial role in enhancing Fenton-like reactions for pollutant degradation and environmental remediation.

Sulfamethoxazole degradation by UV-Fe3+ activated hydrogen sulfite

Shixiang Wang et al.

Summary: A novel UV/Fe3+/BS advanced oxidation system was capable of degrading SMX effectively by generating abundant radicals in aqueous environment. The presence of fulvic acid and HCO3- inhibited the degradation of SMX, while the presence of NO3- accelerated the degradation process by contributing to additional radical generation. LC-MS analysis revealed the degradation pathway of SMX by UV/Fe3+/BS including hydroxylation and bond cleavage.

Degradation of ciprofloxacin using UV-based advanced removal processes: Comparison of persulfate-based advanced oxidation and sulfite-based advanced reduction processes

Hannah Milh et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficiency of UV-based sulfate radical advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) and UV-based advanced reduction processes (ARP) in degrading ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater was investigated. It was found that the UV/PS process was more efficient than the UV/PMS process in SR-AOPs, while the UV/sulfite process was the most efficient among ARPs. The optimal process parameters and the contribution of different reactive species were determined for each process.
