From air quality sensors to sensor networks: Things we need to learn

Yi Li et al.

Summary: Low-cost air quality sensors can provide timely and comprehensive snapshots of pollutant concentrations, but practical guidance for their deployment is lacking. Our research evaluated how these sensors could be used in the U.S., highlighting challenges in designing a uniform monitoring network and the potential for real-time machine learning calibration. Results from New York City showed promising performance of PM2.5 sensors compared to reference methods.

Class comparison enabled mass spectrum purification for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Grant S. Ochoa et al.

Summary: Tile-based Fisher ratio (F-ratio) analysis is a versatile tool for supervised discovery experiments, but challenges may arise in analyte identification due to poor 2D resolution and low analyte abundance. To address this, the class comparison enabled mass spectrum purification (CCE-MSP) method is introduced, utilizing signal consistency between background interference compounds in F-ratio analysis to purify analyte mass spectra.

Gas discrimination based on enhanced gas-species related information obtained by a single gas sensor with novel temperature modulation

Tatsuya Iwata et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel temperature modulation method based on heater voltage for gas discrimination, which allows for acquiring information of various gas species or smells with a reduced number of sensor elements. Experimental results show that this method enhances gas discrimination performance and can be applied for gas discrimination using machine learning algorithms.

Selective gas detection of H2 and CO by a single MOX-sensor

A. V. Shaposhnik et al.

Summary: This study explored the selective analysis of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and their mixtures in air using a SnO2-based metal oxide sensor with the addition of PdOx. By employing a single MOX sensor, quantitative and qualitative analysis of gases were conducted with a focus on a small number of training sample concentrations. The effect of air humidity on the accuracy of gas concentration determination was also investigated, and PCA regression analysis algorithms were used to reduce multidimensional data. Temperature modulation of the SnO2 sensor with PdOx led to a significant increase in sensor responses for gas concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 ppm compared to the stationary temperature regime.
