Development of Permanently Installed Magnetic Eddy Current Sensor for Corrosion Monitoring of Ferromagnetic Pipelines

Rukhshinda Wasif et al.

Summary: Permanently installed sensors are a cost-effective solution for corrosion monitoring, with advantages of less human interference and continuous data acquisition. This paper introduces a novel wireless magnetic eddy current sensor that does not require couplant and can be used over insulations. Sensitivity studies reveal that the excitation frequency is a critical parameter for detecting corrosion defects. Accelerated corrosion tests show that the sensor signals are highly sensitive to corrosion defects and unaffected by temperature and humidity changes.

Crystallographic effects on transgranular chloride-induced stress corrosion crack propagation of arc welded austenitic stainless steel

Haozheng J. Qu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of crystallography on transgranular chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (TGCISCC) in arc welded 304L austenitic stainless steel. The crack propagation can be explained by mechanical arguments, and the competition between mechanical, crystallographic, and corrosion factors is discussed in relation to crack behavior at grain boundaries.

Distributed fibre optic sensors in FRP composite bridge monitoring: Validation through proof load tests

Tomasz Siwowski et al.

Summary: The DFOS technique based on Rayleigh scattering was chosen for the first Polish FRP composite bridge as the basic SHM system, and its validation through proof load tests and FEA showed that it is accurate and reliable for monitoring FRP bridges. Additional strain measurement techniques were implemented to validate DFOS, and the comparison of measurement profiles with FEA results also supported the reliability and accuracy of the DFOS technique for FRP bridge monitoring.

Evaluating in-service structural behaviour of an operational railway bridge using fibre optic sensing and structural model updating

Cong Ye et al.

Summary: Multi-girder prestressed concrete bridges are commonly used around the world due to their advantages in construction speed, maintenance reduction, and material efficiency. However, the in-service behavior of these structures, including load distribution characteristics and support conditions, is not well understood. This study evaluates the structural behavior of an operational prestressed concrete railway bridge, using a dense network of fiber optic sensors to extract information on load distribution, support conditions, and secondary element stiffness. The proposed methodology and workflow provide insights into the real performance of these bridges, aiding in their operation, maintenance, assessment, and refurbishment.

Real-time corrosion monitoring of aluminium alloys under chloride-contaminated atmospheric conditions

Erwan Diler et al.

Summary: The study assessed the use of electrical resistance (ER) sensors to monitor the corrosion of Al94Cu6 alloy, showing good reproducibility under various conditions. The ER method provides real-time corrosion data for understanding corrosion mechanisms and developing accelerated tests. Factors such as chloride concentration, salt application frequency, and wet/dry cycles significantly affect the corrosion rate of aluminum alloys.

A multi-cantilever beam low-frequency FBG acceleration sensor

Li Hong et al.

Summary: This study addresses the issue of low sensitivity in FBG acceleration sensors for low-frequency vibration measurements by proposing a multi-cantilever beam low-frequency FBG acceleration sensor. The sensor, optimized through simulation analysis, exhibits high sensitivity and low transverse crosstalk, making it suitable for monitoring low-frequency vibration signals within the range of 16-54Hz. Performance tests show that the sensor has a sensitivity of approximately 87.955 pm/m s^(-2), with a linearity exceeding 99% and a transverse interference immunity below 2.58%.
