Feasibility assessment of next-generation drones powering by laser-based wireless power transfer

Summary: This study investigates the theoretical feasibility of a laser-based wireless power transfer mechanism for drone applications, showing that drones can be wirelessly charged during operation at a considerable distance with acceptable efficiency. The use of a two-phase cooling system for the PV panel is suggested to reduce the temperature. Results demonstrate the net power received by equipped drones using different PV materials at a 500 m distance, with GaAs providing the highest net power.

Gain Expressions for Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer with One Electric Field Repeater

Summary: This paper analyzes the use of a repeater element in a capacitive wireless power transfer system to achieve larger transfer distances. By adopting a network formalism, the performance is described using three power gains commonly used in two-port active networks. Analytical expressions of the gains as a function of network elements are derived and the conditions for maximizing the gains through adjustment of network terminating impedances are determined, with the analytical formulas verified through circuital simulations.

It demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of RF lensing techniques which can recover more than 2 W of dc power wirelessly at distances greater than 1 m. The system can project power dynamically at various angles and distances greater than 10 m, showing potential for unified wireless power, sensing, and communication solutions in the future.
