Commercially available unoccupied aerial systems for monitoring harmful algal blooms: A comparative study

Edna G. Fernandez-Figueroa et al.

Summary: This study found that commercial multiband multispectral UAS sensors provide a low-cost, plug-and-play alternative for managers and researchers interested in quantitatively estimating phytoplankton abundance in small inland systems. Evaluation of sensor performance revealed that vegetation indices generated from Parrot Sequoia aerial images, including red and near-infrared wavelengths, provided the best estimates of Chl a and phycocyanin. RGB sensors were moderately effective for estimating Chl a, while the MAPIR Survey3W sensor generated poor estimates for both pigments.

A commentary review on the use of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the era of popular remote sensing

Sha Huang et al.

Summary: The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a popular index for vegetation assessment due to its simplicity and ability to be calculated with any multispectral sensor. However, considerations such as atmospheric effects, saturation phenomena, and sensor factors must be taken into account to ensure effective use of NDVI in various applications, particularly in the UAV user community.

Cascade R-CNN: High Quality Object Detection and Instance Segmentation

Zhaowei Cai et al.

Summary: In object detection, the commonly used IoU threshold of 0.5 can lead to noisy detections, and performance may degrade for larger thresholds. The Cascade R-CNN architecture addresses this issue by training detectors sequentially with increasing IoU thresholds and eliminating quality mismatches at inference, resulting in state-of-the-art performance and significant improvement in high-quality detection across various datasets. The model is also generalized to instance segmentation, achieving nontrivial improvements over existing methods.

Quantifying Scales of Spatial Variability of Cyanobacteria in a Large, Eutrophic Lake Using Multiplatform Remote Sensing Tools

Samantha L. Sharp et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive view of cyanobacterial blooms in Clear Lake, California, by evaluating the spatial heterogeneity and temporal dynamics of these blooms using various remote sensing tools. The results showed that the high resolution AUV and sUAS data analysis found the Critical Scale of Variability for cyanobacterial blooms to range from 70 to 175 m, finer than what is resolvable by the satellite data, indicating high spatial variability within each 300 m satellite pixel.
