Slope stability prediction using ensemble learning techniques: A case study in Yunyang County, Chongqing, China

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study develops an ensemble learning-based method using random forest and extreme gradient boosting to predict slope stability. The predictive performance is compared among different models using 786 landslide cases in Yunyang County, China. The results demonstrate the superiority of ensemble learning models in slope stability prediction.

Machine learning algorithms to estimate drying characteristics of apples slices dried with different methods

Cevdet Saglam et al.

Summary: This study dried three different apple cultivars using five different methods and then used machine learning algorithms to estimate the moisture ratio, moisture content, and drying rate. The results showed that random forest was the most successful algorithm for estimating the drying characteristics, followed by support vector regression and k-nearest neighbors.

Prediction of undrained shear strength using extreme gradient boosting and random forest based on Bayesian optimization

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study applies XGBoost and RF methods to predict the USS of soft clays, showing that these approaches outperform traditional methods. Bayesian optimization is used to determine model hyperparameters, leading to more accurate and robust models.

Root zone soil moisture estimation with Random Forest

Coleen Carranza et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of root zone soil moisture is crucial for agricultural and hydrological applications. Machine learning techniques, specifically Random Forest algorithm, showed higher accuracy in predicting soil moisture but less accurate in extreme wet and dry conditions.

Multi-layer high-resolution soil moisture estimation using machine learning over the United States

L. Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: This study develops a machine-learning algorithm to estimate multi-layer soil moisture information based on local climatic and landscape controls in the Contiguous United States (CONUS). The study clusters CONUS into homogeneous regions and applies the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to capture the complex relationship between predictor variables and in-situ soil moisture at different depths. Results show varying levels of influence of predictor variables on soil moisture with changing soil depth, with meteorological variables having the least importance.

Estimating Agricultural Soil Moisture Content through UAV-Based Hyperspectral Images in the Arid Region

Xiangyu Ge et al.

Summary: Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral remote sensing is an important monitoring technology for soil moisture content (SMC) in agroecological systems in arid regions. In this study, UAV-based hyperspectral imaging data was collected from farmland near Fukang City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, and four estimation strategies were tested. The Fractional-Order Derivative (FOD) technology proved to effectively mine information, and strategy IV using FOD combined with the optimal multiband indices yielded the best estimates for SMC among the tested methods.

Recalibration and performance comparison of soil moisture sensors using regression and neural network characteristic models

Sagar Verma et al.

Summary: In this study, a laboratory-based virtual instrumentation system was implemented for recalibration of various smart soil moisture sensors, along with modeling and performance analysis. The system integrates the gravimetric method with wireless data acquisition to measure water content in field soil and analyze sensor voltage samples. The proposed system effectively tests and records recalibration data of different soil moisture sensors, developing accurate characteristic models for them.
