Cellular plasticity upon proton irradiation determines tumor cell radiosensitivity

Inaki Schniewind et al.

Summary: Proton irradiation shows a higher potential to target cancer stem cells (CSCs) compared to conventional photon irradiation, through induction of complex DNA damages, lower rates of cellular senescence, and minor alterations in histone methylation pattern. ALDH-positive CSCs and ALDH-negative cancer cells show different plasticity rates between the two types of irradiation.

Assessment of Aspartate and Bicarbonate Produced From Hyperpolarized [1-13C]Pyruvate as Markers of Renal Gluconeogenesis

Hikari A. I. Yoshihara et al.

Summary: Measuring renal gluconeogenesis using invasive techniques is challenging, but less invasive methods like magnetic resonance spectroscopy can provide sensitive detection of metabolism. In fasted rats, pyruvate-to-bicarbonate conversion in the kidney is mainly through PDH flux, while aspartate conversion serves as a potential marker of renal gluconeogenesis following PEPCK inhibition.

Metabolism of cancer cells commonly responds to irradiation by a transient early mitochondrial shutdown

Adam Krysztofiak et al.

Summary: This study combined mathematical modeling with radiation biology data to uncover a common metabolic response in cancer cells under stress conditions, revealing a process that affects DNA repair kinetics. By targeting metabolic responses, it was possible to slow down mitochondrial recovery and DNA repair kinetics, which may offer opportunities for therapeutic interventions.

Monitoring Early Glycolytic Flux Alterations Following Radiotherapy in Cancer and Immune Cells: Hyperpolarized Carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

Ying-Chieh Lai et al.

Summary: The study utilized a new imaging technique, DNP C-13-MRI, to explore the metabolic effects of radiation on cancer cells and immune cells. The results showed significant changes in glycolytic flux rates in different types of cells after irradiation, suggesting the potential clinical utility of DNP C-13-MRI for future treatments.
